Prerequisites:
Two years of high school algebra and a Math Enhanced ACT of 17-18 or COMPASS
placement or successful completion of MATH 1000 or equivalent.
Course Description:
This is a special section of Math 1010 with additional content addressing
deficiencies
which may hinder successful completion of the course. It is not a
prerequisite to Math 1010, but it is an
equivalent course and satisfies the
same General Education mathematics requirement.

Course ID: TBA
Text:
Mathematical Ideas, 11th edition by Miller, Heeren, and Hornsby, with
supplemental material
from Beginning and Intermediate Algebra, MTSU ed.
by Lial, Hornsby, and McGinnis. You must have
your own access code
from the publisher to access MyMathLab on the CourseCompass.com Website
in
order to do your homework. You need to have purchased that component for the
course to start your
homework the first week of class. You may purchase the
text from the bookstore with the supplement
and MML code shrink-wrapped with it.
Or you may purchase an MML code only at the bookstore or
online from the publisher;
the online textbook
is then available to you. You must decide if you feel that
you need the
textbook
in printed form. It is less expensive to just buy the code and have the
book online.
To buy the code online, go
to
http://www.CourseCompass.com and register using our
Course ID. You will be directed to a site to purchase your code. If you
are
repeating the
course, your MML code from last semester should work for you
again. A
textbook is on
reserve in the library.
>>>Purchasing a used textbook from a friend, some books stores, or some other
online
source will not give you the required access code to MML.<<<
Calculator Required: A
TI-83, TI-83 Plus, TI-84 or TI-84 Plus graphing calculator is
required for this
course. For TI-83 calculator help, go
to
http://www.mtsu.edu/~jraines/calculator/calchelp.html. Bring your calculator to class
every day. TI-89,
TI-92, and TI-Voyage calculators are not allowed. Calculators cannot
be shared
during tests, and cell phones, laptops or pda's cannot be used.
Math Lab:
The Academic Enrichment Math Lab is located in the Stark Agriscience
Agribusiness Center, SAG 202. My office is in the same building. A schedule will
be posted early in the semester.
Computer Access:
MyMathLab is a required component of this course. You will
need
Internet access either at home, or you may use the computers in the
Math Lab in
SAG 202. Other computer labs on campus may be used if the
correct plug-ins
are installed.
Requirements for the
course:
a. Attend class lectures.
b. Bring a graphing
calculator, pencil, and notebook to class each day.
c. Participate in all class
activities, take notes, and work in-class problems.
d. Read and study class
assignments.
e. Solve assigned problem
sets online in MyMathLab.
f. Complete all assignments
on time.
g. Write tests and quizzes.
Topics:
This course consists of selected topics from the
Lial/Hornsby
text and selected topics from Chapters 1, 2, 3, 9, 11, 12, 13, and
14 in the
required Miller, Heeren, Hornsby text.
Tests:
Six major tests will be given throughout the semester. One of the six test
grades will be dropped. The average of the five remaining tests will count 65%
of your grade. (These major tests do not include the final exam.)
Homework Assignments:
The majority of homework assignments will be on-line
through MyMathLab. The
average of all homework including MyMathLab
homework will count as 15% of your
grade for the course.
Final Exam:
The final exam is a comprehensive exam and will count 20% of your
grade. The
final exam is mandatory, and the grade cannot be dropped. If you do
not take the
final exam, you will receive an F in the course.
Attendance:
More than 3 absences in this class will result in an automatic F
for the course.
Three tardies or early exits will be counted as one absence. At the
discretion
of the instructor, absences may be made up by working on mathematics
for two
hours in the Math Lab, SAG 202 within a week of the absence. If you cease
to
attend class, your last day of attendance will be reported. This could affect
your
financial aid and/or scholarships.
Grading:
After rounding the grade average, x, to the nearest percent, the grade will be:
If 90% <
x < 100%, then an A has been earned.
If 80% <
x < 89%, then a B has been earned.
If 70% <
x < 79%, then a C has been earned.
If x
< 70%, then an F has been earned.
There are no D’s and no
plus/minus grades. A grade of C or better is required for
successful completion
of this course.
Classroom Conduct:
1. Do not bring children, friends, or pets to class with you.
2. TURN OFF ALL CELL PHONES DURING CLASS AND LAB TIME.
The exception to this is
that if you are signed up for RAVE with MTSU, you
may keep you phone on vibrate
in order to receive alert messages only.
3. No earphones may be worn in class; no electronic equipment may be
played in
class.
4. Sleeping or working on assignments for another course during class is
prohibited.
5. Academic dishonesty (i.e. copying homework, receiving or giving help on tests
or quizzes) will result in a zero being given on the test or assignment.
Personal
integrity is expected of all students.
6. Ball caps must be turned backwards or removed during tests.
7. Class disruption, inappropriate language, and inappropriate clothing are not
allowed. You are expected to respect your fellow students as well as your
instructor and to be a positive part of the learning environment.
8. Laptops may not be used in class.
Please note the
following information:
- Students may not
drop or withdraw from this course
unless they withdraw
from all University courses or obtain permission from
the Academic Enrichment
Director in PH 202.
- A grade of I
will be given only in accordance with the University Policy.
- If you have a
disability that may require
assistance or accommodation, or
you have questions related to any
accommodations for testing, note takers,
readers, etc., please speak with
the instructor as soon as possible. Students
may also contact the Office of
Disabled Students Services at 615-898-2783 with
questions about such
services.

Do you have a
lottery scholarship?
To retain Tennessee Education Lottery
Scholarship eligibility, you must earn a cumulative TELS GPA of 2.75 after
24 and 48 attempted hours and a cumulative TELS GPA of 3.0
thereafter. You may qualify with a 2.75 cumulative GPA after 72
attempted hours (and subsequent semesters), if you are enrolled full-time
and maintain a semester GPA of at least 3.0. A grade of C, D, F, or
I in this class may negatively impact TELS eligibility. Dropping a class
after 14 days may also impact eligibility; if you withdraw from this class
and it results in an enrollment status of less than full time, you may lose
eligibility for your lottery scholarship. Lottery recipients are eligible to
receive the scholarship for a maximum of five years from the date of initial
enrollment, or until a bachelor degree is earned. For additional Lottery
rules, please refer to your Lottery Statement of Understanding form, review
lottery requirements on the web at
http://scholarships.web.mtsu.edu/telsconteligibility.htm,
or contact the Financial Aid Office at 898-2830.
