Course  Description:

MATH 1000K will serve students as an introduction to learning mathematics. The course will encompass objectives and techniques of learning mathematics, technology skills, problem solving and critical thinking. This three credit hour course will meet for three hours in the classroom and will have a required two-hour online lab component each week. The two-hour lab component will include structured online activities through CourseCompass. The mathematics component in CourseCompass is referred to as MyMathLab. Assignments (labs) may be completed in the Academic Enrichment Math Lab in SAG 202 or wherever you have access to a computer with the appropriate software. Many of the computer labs on campus are set up with the plug-ins needed to run MyMathLab.

Sequence of Courses: For those students required to take MATH 1000K, it is the first course in a two-semester sequence. After completing MATH 1000K, students will enroll in MATH 1010K or 1710K. Students will earn elective credit for MATH 1000K and general education credit for MATH 1010K or MATH 1710K.

Text:  Elementary and Intermediate Algebra: Graphs and Models, custom edition for Middle Tennessee State by Bittinger, Ellenbogen and Johnson. You must have your own access code from the publisher to access MyMathLab on the CourseCompass.com Website in order to do your homework. You need to have purchased that component for the course to start your homework the first week of class. You may purchase the text from the bookstore with the MML code shrink-wrapped with it. Or you may purchase an MML code only from the bookstore or online from the publisher; the online textbook is then available to you. You must decide if you feel that you need the textbook in printed form. It is less expensive to buy the code and have the book online.

To buy the code online, go to http://www.CourseCompass.com and register using our Course ID. You will be directed to a site to purchase your code. If you are repeating the course, your MML code from last semester should work for you again. A textbook is on reserve in the library.

Instructions for registering for the course are located at: http://media.pearsoncmg.com/cmg/pmmg/pmmg_mml_shared/MML_MSL_Stud_Reg.pdf

 >>>Purchasing a used textbook from a friend, some books stores, or some other online source will not give you the required access code to MML.<<<

Calculator Required: A TI-83, TI-83 Plus, TI-84 or TI-84 Plus graphing calculator is required for this course.  Bring your calculator to class each day. TI-89, TI-92, and TI-Voyage calculators are not allowed. Calculators cannot be shared during tests, and cell phones, laptops or pda's cannot be used. For TI-83 calculator help, go to http://www.mtsu.edu/~jraines/calculator/calchelp.html.

Requirements for the course:

a. Attend class lectures.
b. Bring a graphing calculator, pencil, and notebook to class each day.
c. Participate in all class activities, take notes, and work in-class problems.
d. Read and study class assignments.
e. Complete all assignments online in MyMathLab and others on time.
f. Write tests and quizzes.

Tests:
Five major tests will be given throughout the semester. The average of the five tests will count 65% of your grade. (These major tests do not include the final exam.) If you miss a test, contact your instructor the day of the test to explain your absence and to request a makeup date.

Homework Assignments: The majority, if not all, assignments will be online through CourseCompass. These should always be completed on time. Student access to past due homework assignments on CourseCompass may be shut down at anytime by the instructor without notice. The average of all assignments will count as 15% of your grade for the course.

Final Exam: The final exam is a comprehensive, departmental  exam and will count 20% of your grade. The final exam is mandatory, and the grade cannot be dropped. If you do not take the final exam, you will receive an F in the course.

Attendance: Attendance is expected for every class session. You are responsible for all material covered in class. If you cease to attend class, your last day of attendance will be reported. This could affect your financial aid and/or scholarships.

Attendance Bonus: A bonus of ten (10) points will be added to the point total for the five major test if the student has no more than three (3) absences for any reason and has neither been tardy or left early more than three times for any reason.

Grading:  After rounding the grade average, x, to the nearest percent, the grade will be:

                If 90% < x < 100%, then an A has been earned.
                If 80% < x < 89%, then a B has been earned.
                If 70% < x < 79%, then a C has been earned.
If x < 70%, then an F has been earned.
There are no D’s and no plus/minus grades. A grade of C or better is required for successful completion of this course.

Classroom Conduct:
1. Do not bring children, friends, or pets to class with you.
2. TURN OFF ALL CELL PHONES DURING CLASS AND LAB TIME. The exception to this is that if you are signed up for RAVE with MTSU, you may keep you phone on vibrate in order to receive alert messages only.
3. No earphones may be worn in class; no electronic equipment may be played in class.
4. Sleeping or working on assignments for another course during class is prohibited.
5. Academic dishonesty (i.e. copying homework, receiving or giving help on tests or quizzes) will result in a zero being given on the test or assignment. Personal integrity is expected of all students.
6. Ball caps must be turned backwards or removed during tests.
7. Class disruption, inappropriate language, and inappropriate clothing are not allowed. You are expected to respect your fellow students as well as your instructor and to be a positive part of the learning environment.
8. Laptops may not be used in class.

 Please note the following information:

  • Students may not drop or withdraw from this course unless they withdraw from all University courses or obtain permission from the Academic Enrichment Director in PH 202.
  • A grade of I will be given only in accordance with the University Policy.
  • If you have a disability that may require assistance or accommodation, or you have questions related to any accommodations for testing, note takers, readers, etc., please speak with the instructor as soon as possible.  Students may also contact the Office of Disabled Students Services at 615-898-2783 with questions about such services.
  • Do you have a lottery scholarship?

To retain Tennessee Education Lottery Scholarship eligibility, you must earn a cumulative TELS GPA of 2.75 after 24 and 48 attempted hours and a cumulative TELS GPA of 3.0 thereafter.  You may qualify with a 2.75 cumulative GPA after 72 attempted hours (and subsequent semesters), if you are enrolled full-time and maintain a semester GPA of at least 3.0.  A grade of C, D, F, or I in this class may negatively impact TELS eligibility.  Dropping a class after 14 days may also impact eligibility; if you withdraw from this class and it results in an enrollment status of less than full time, you may lose eligibility for your lottery scholarship. Lottery recipients are eligible to receive the scholarship for a maximum of five years from the date of initial enrollment, or until a bachelor degree is earned.  For additional Lottery rules, please refer to your Lottery Statement of Understanding form, review lottery requirements on the web at

http://scholarships.web.mtsu.edu/telsconteligibility.htm, or contact the Financial Aid Office at 898-2830.
