Cacy DeSheles
Undergraduate Student
Biochemistry
I did really well in math, and enjoyed science very much. I especially liked biology, and would spend hours out in the woods trying to identify things. My most memorable teacher in high school was my chemistry teacher, Mr. Norris.
2) Why did you
choose to work in your field?
I enjoy both aspects of biology and chemistry, therefore a picked a field that tied the two together. Eventually, I would like to incorporate veterinary medicine in with those two as well. I love animals and would love to work with them every day.
3) What are some
areas of your job that you like the most?
As a student, I enjoyed the work that I do with WISE (Women In Science and Engineering) the most, such as mentoring young ladies interested in STEM, or fellow undergraduate students that need a hand. I also enjoy the benefits that I gain from WISE, such as the same help when I need it.
4) What one thing
would you tell a middle or high school girl who is considering majoring in stem
in college?
There is no reason to not make that consideration a possibility. Women have just as much fun in the stem areas as men, and there is a dire need for those women. Science is fun, and being able to make that your career is a wonderful opportunity.
5) Please provide a
short biography and a photo.
I was born in the country of Cheatham County, and grew up on farmland where I have always been exposed to the tom-boy way of life. I have always enjoyed succeeding in fields that were “dominated by the boys.” I used to help my father build race engines when I was younger, and built my first engine, a 350 Chevrolet motor, by myself when I was 12. I would like to spend my days in the African safari’s searching for exotic animals.
