REQUIREMENT 6

Read through pages 79-85 in the merit badge book and use the information below to complete requirement 6 on the worksheet.

Do the following:

6.a. Explain how a government is represented abroad and how is the United States government accredited to international organizations?

Look at the web site of the U.S. State Department, which has primary responsibility for representing the United States around the world. You can also look specifically at the Websites of U.S. Embassies and Consulates.

There are thousands of international organizations—some small, some large, some dealing with broad issues, some dealing with very specific issues. These are voluntary organizations that countries choose to join to try and solve problems together; the United States is a member of scores of such organizations.

The largest international organization is the United Nations.

The CIA’s World Factbook provides a very complete listing of International Organizations and Groups. Skim through this listing to see the names, wide range of issues addressed, and those that the U.S. has joined.

6.b. Describe the roles of the following in the conduct of foreign relations:

·        Ambassador - Read “Ambassador” from Wikipedia.

·        Consul - Read “Consulate General” from Wikipedia.

·        Bureau of International Information Programs - Read Bureau of International Information Programs.

·        Agency for International Development - Read “Our Work: A Better Future for All” from the AID.

·        U.S. and Foreign Commercial Service - Read  U.S. Commercial Service (read the "Vision" and "Services" links on the
      right hand side)

6.c. Explain the purpose of a passport and visa for international travel.

Simply read What Is A Passport Anyway?, What Does It Look Like?, Why Do I Need One? from Passportinfo.
