REQUIREMENT 7

Read through pages 87-91 in the merit badge book and use the information below to complete requirement 9 on the worksheet.

Do TWO of the following (with your parent's permission) and share with your counselor what you have learned:

A) Visit the web site of the U.S. State Department. Learn more about an issue you find interesting that is discussed on this web site.

If you choose this option, click on the
State Department web site and navigate through the "Issues and Press" page. Be able to discuss the issue you select in some detail.

B) Visit the web site of an international news organization or foreign government, OR examine a foreign newspaper available at your local library, bookstore, or newsstand. Find a news story about a human right realized in the United States that is not recognized in another country.

If you choose this option, these are some links for both international news organizations and foreign government. As required, focus on a human right respected in the U.S. that is denied elsewhere.

C) Visit with a student or Scout from another country and discuss the typcial values, holidays, ethnic foods, and traditions practiced or enjoyed there.

If you choose this option, provide your counselor with the name and country of the foreign exchange student, the date the discussion was held, and brief notes on what was discussed.

D) Attend a world Scout jamboree.

See the 21st World Jamboree 2007 for complete information. The 2007 World Jamboree will have the theme “One World, One Promise,” and will be a celebration of the Centenary of Scouting.

E)
Take part in an international event in your area.

If you have an event in mind for this option, see your counselor for approval. In the Nashville area, the Scarritt Bennett Center holds its “Celebration of Cultures” each year, usually in early June. This is an annual international festival with music, food, and crafts from around the world.
