Scholarships to Intern in
Washington, D.C.
The Washington Center (TWC)
Students may use the scholarship to intern any semester
during the 2009-2010 academic year.
Important
Note
Given the current economic
uncertainties, these scholarships are dependent on final budget approval. The
application and selection process will proceed according to plan, but final
approval will not be certain until the State of Tennessee adopts a budget for
next year and it is clear the monies for this program remain available.
The Tennessee Board of
Regents is offering six scholarships for
MTSU students to work and study in Washington, D.C. during the spring and summer
2009 semesters.
The internship is run through The Washington Center, a long-standing
non-profit organization that supervises hundreds of interns in Washington every
semester. You will be placed in an internship based on your career goals four
days a week, and attend a seminar course related to your internship topic the
remaining day. You will thus earn 12 hours of internship credit and 3 hours of
seminar course credit. Periodically throughout the semester, you will also have
the opportunity meet and attend talks by elected officials, political reporters,
campaign consultants, and so on. You have the option of living in either
Washington Center housing or private housing.
Previous MTSU students who
have interned with The Washington Center have worked in the Vice-President’s
office, in Congressional offices, for lobbying firms, in the State Department,
in law offices, and for news organizations. It is a great opportunity for any
student interested in any aspect of politics, public policy, or government.

Scholarship Amount
The TBR scholarships are designed to
cover the difference in costs between a semester at MTSU and in
Washington. The exact details vary a little for each student depending
on how college is being financed-- with lottery monies, academic
scholarships, loans, and so on. Once students are selected for the
program, each will have an individual meeting with the Financial Aid
office on campus. Thus far, they have been able to make it work for
every student going to Washington, so the scholarship amount covers the
difference in cost between MTSU and Washington. |
Requirements: - be a
junior or senior the semester you will be in Washington
- have a GPA of at least 3.0
- ALL MAJORS ARE WELCOME
- have a real interest in some aspect of public
affairs
- have all application materials submitted by
APRIL 17, 2009
- once selected for a scholarship, students must be
accepted for admission by

How To Apply: Students we select for the scholarships will also
eventually
need to apply for admission to The Washington Center. Rather than have you
complete two separate applications-- one for the TBR Scholarship and one for
admission to The Washington Center-- we will use one form for both steps.
Thus, to apply, you will complete the application for The Washington Center and
drop it off to me. After you have been selected for one of the scholarships, you
will be able to take the same application and submit it to The Washington
Center. This way, we minimize the paperwork you have to complete.
So, to apply, please:
Step 1 - Print off a copy of The Washington Center Application form:

Step 3 - Enclose the materials requested in the "Additional Application
