MTSU Energy Task Force Introduces New Center On Campus

The Center for Energy Efficiency (CEE) originated out of interest in introducing energy efficient measures on campus and sharing what was learned with other college campuses and the community. With support from the vice president for Finance and Administration and cooperation from Academic Affairs, the Center will provide facilities support to our campus to upgrade the infrastructure and to improve operations and maintenance. The CEE promotes economic and environmental awareness and stewardship by providing educational and training opportunities and experiences for the students, faculty, administration, and others in the community. Through association with DOE's Rebuild America, EPA's Energy Star and Green Lights, and Tennessee's State Building Energy Management Program, the CEE supports campus, classroom, and community efforts to achieve energy efficiency and provides leadership in meeting rapidly changing energy management needs.

Seminar for Certified Energy Managers
The Center for Energy Efficiency is hosting a comprehensive five-day seminar for energy professionals on campus on March 15 - 19, 1999. Presented by the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE), the seminar covers the technical, economic, and regulatory aspects of effective energy management. The learning and problem-solving course offers an understanding of the latest energy cost reduction techniques and strategies and is followed by the certification examination on the afternoon of the last day.  Instructors are Bill Mashburn, PE, CEM, 1990 International Energy Teacher of the Year, 1996 president of AEE, professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department of Virginia Tech, and founder and director of the Energy Management Institute and Walt Johnston., PE, CEM, CLEP, CDSM, 1998 International Energy Engineer of the Year, 1992 president of AEE, and co-founder of the EM Program.

MTSU Names Staff for Center
The director of the Center for Energy Efficiency is Joe Whitefield. He has recently joined MTSU from Oak Ridge National Laboratory where he served as energy manager for six years. Joe is a graduate of Tennessee Tech, a professional engineer, and a Certified Energy Manager. Most recently, he received the 1998 Federal Energy and Water Management Award from the Department of Energy and the Federal Interagency Energy Policy Committee for his energy management work at ORNL. The other staff members include Dr. Kathy Mathis as co-director of the Center. Kathy is the coordinator of the Environmental Science and Technology Program at MTSU, a member of the MTSU Energy Task Force, chair of the Association of Energy Engineers' (AEE) Performance Contracting Committee, and a Certified Energy Manager. Dr. Ahad Nasab, PE, faculty member in the Department of Engineering Technology and Industrial Studies at MTSU, is the faculty advisor for the CEE; Linda Hardymon, the technical coordinator, has a degree in Environmental Science and Technology and a Masters in Safety from MTSU and has been involved with the Task Force and the PC Committee for three years; and Debbie Nichols is the secretary. Also working to establish the CEE is Dr. Ed Voorhies, chair of the MTSU Energy Task Force, Professor Emeritus, and retired dean of the College of Basic and Applied Sciences at MTSU.

TEE EXPO
On May 5th and 6th , the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) and MTSU are hosting the 1999 Tennessee Energy and Environmental Expo. This year's theme is ENERGY IMPACT 99. Several excellent speakers are scheduled to share their views on energy cost barriers, building trust in energy projects, and other topics impacting us all. Great instructors are lined up to lead the breakout sessions and bring us all up to date on what's happening and what we need to know to stay informed. Topics include ESPC, M&V, case studies, utility deregulation, power quality, government programs, compliance, solar updates, and several technical sessions.
This year's EXPO coincides with Clear Air Week. Some interesting vehicles will be on hand to check out: electric bus from the Electric Transit Vehicle Institute, electric car from TVA, solar car from MTSU, hydrogen car from MTSU, compressed gas vehicle from Nashville Gas, solar bike under development by the Tennessee Solar Energy Association and MTSU, and other items of interest.  The two days will be filled with useful information, networking, and vendor displays. For registration information, contact the Tennessee Energy and Environmental Expo at 615-253-1942 or the MTSU Center for Energy Efficiency at 615-904-8096. Plan to attend!

Congratulations to CEMs
In August 1998, 26 brave souls interested in energy management and energy efficiency attended the CEM seminar on campus. Half of the class passed the grueling exam. Of the MTSU attendees who earned the right to be designated a Certified Energy Manager are Kathy Mathis and Reggie Floyd. Congratulations to these two achievers!!!

MTSU Signs with Rebuild America and Energy Star
Rebuild America is a voluntary U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) program that assists its partners in choosing the best ways to save money by cutting energy use by means of renovating existing buildings. Through technical assistance and resources from the Rebuild America staff, MTSU is on its way to becoming a more energy efficient campus.
MTSU has also signed an Energy Star Buildings and Green Lights Partnership with EPA. This voluntary agreement offers assistance and motivation to save energy and money by improving the efficiency of buildings on campus. In return for the commitment to upgrade our buildings, partners receive access to services, information, tools, and resources from EPA.

CEE is on the WEB
The CEE home page is under construction at this time, but should soon be available for viewing. Be sure to check in from time to time to get energy educated! The address is (case sensitive) http://www.mtsu.edu/~cee
