COURSE DESCRIPTION: Topics include factoring, rational expressions, radical expressions, solving and graphing quadratic equations and inequalities, and applications of systems of equations.

COURSE GOAL:  The goal of Intermediate Algebra is to help students achieve a level of academic competence in intermediate algebra skills that will enable them to work successfully in college level courses.

PLACEMENT: Students are placed in DSPM 0850 based on their ACT mathematics sub-score or their performance on the COMPASS Placement Test. Once placed, students must successfully complete the class before enrolling in another mathematics course. Please see the Academic Support Center advisors, 898-2339,  if there are any questions concerning placement.

TEST UP OPPORTUNITY: In DSPM 0850, students are given the opportunity to test out of the class and proceed to a college level mathematics course offered in the Mathematical Sciences Department. Each class is given a thirty-five minute, twenty-five question, multiple choice test on the first day of class. All students are required to take this pre-test. If a student scores an 18 or greater on this pre-test, he/she may have the opportunity to change courses. Students who have a high school math deficiency or who have attempted to course before will not be allowed to test out.

ATTENDANCE POLICY: Regular class attendance is mandatory for students to perform at their highest potential. Therefore, the Developmental Studies Department observes a strict class attendance policy:

If a class is missed, the student is responsible for all assignments made and material covered.
All absences must be documented to appeal an F grade for having more than the allowed number of absences.

TEXTBOOK: Elementary and Intermediate Algebra: Graphs and Models by Bittinger, Ellenbogen, and Johnson. This course begins in chapter six of the textbook.

GRAPHING CALCULATOR:  A graphing calculator is required. Course instructon will be based on the TI 83/83+.  Certain types of calculators are not allowed; see your individual instructor for details or go to GUIDELINES FOR CALCULATOR USE.
