KEN BAIN

TEACHING THE BASICS WITH NEW TECHNOLOGIES

Ken Bain, director of the Center of Teaching Excellence at New York University and author of What the Best College Teachers Do, came to MTSU on April 21, 2006, to lead an all-day event for MTSU faculty.  His showcase--"Teaching the Basics with New Technologies," was held at the Consolidated Utility District's Conference Center, with continental breakfast and lunch provided.

Ken Bain has spent over 15 years researching the "best" college teachers in different disciplines and universities throughout the United States.   His talk focused on what makes a great teacher, integrating new technologies into teaching, why students remember some professors long after college, how the great teachers engage and challenge students, how professors can use a variety of pedagogical tools to improve learning, and why teaching matters.

Ken Bain's writings on college teaching focus on the relationship between teacher and student to explain how learning can succeed...or fail.  Needless to say, once the teacher burns out, stops growing, loses interest, learning fizzeles out as well.
