Lavery Lectures in Australia
Dr. David Lavery traveled to Australia this summer to give a series of lectures on the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
At the Sonic Synergies/Creative Cultures conference at the University of South Australia in Adelaide, he gave one of the keynote speeches: “’I wrote my thesis on you!’ Buffy Studies as an Academic Cult.”
At Staking a Claim: Exploring the Global Reach of Buffy (also held in Adelaide) he gave a second keynote called “’Fatal Environment’: Buffy the Vampire Slayer and American Culture.”
And, in addition to being guest of honor at a "Buffy Ball" held at the University of Melbourne to commemorate the end of the television series, he also delivered another invited lecture: “Apocalyptic Apocalypses: Buffy’s Narrative Eschatology.”
The co-editor (with Rhonda V. Wilcox) of a book on Buffy (Fighting the Forces: What's at Stake in Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and an e-journal (Slayage: The Online International Journal of Buffy Studies (slayage.tv), Dr. Lavery is also organizing a major conference on Buffy, sponsored by MTSU, to be held in Nashville May 28-30, 2004.
