A Fragment from the Song of Creation
Benjamin Lee Whorf

The thunder of the Lord came up out of the bottomless past and there were seen phenomena!
I'm told no matter by whom that 'twas done for the sons of Him the Lord!
This I heard I know not where: wonders shall be their habitation.
Yea, and in signs and forces their delight.

For this forms were to flash in a substance, of basic nature intelligible;
Forms should take substance universal, all connected, communicating,
And from that substance, behold: a Communicator,
Even Light, the language of joy.

The darkness raged; the thick darkness surged as black boiling pitch;
The latencies in the gruesome darkness seethed with a rearing and a growling
When they felt the force that should develop them;
When they heard the whisper in the past and future telling of predestination:
Then it was terrible in the gnashing, grinding darkness
Between first-potential and the dawn of the day.

The Word went forth; power and intelligence were radiated,
Phenomenalized was intelligence throughout all space,
On and on and on, even to infinity.
It was Light, and the Infinite Wisdom saw it defend all creative intelligence.
It swept all strangled latency out of darkness into harmonious phenomena,
And darkness became Night, sweet vast infinite void, immense and bare;
And there was spatial, temporal sinking into mysterious generative reservoirs.
Yea, there was continual echoing from of old,
And there was continual emergence of the seen, which had been seen before all foundations:--
These made a realm of space and time, these limned a physical universe--
That mighty phenomenon was the first day.
