EST 4820/5820 Active Solar Design

LECTURE: VIS 243, TR 2:00p.m. – 3:15p.m.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Broad introduction to active solar applications in the form of air heaters, concentrating collectors,
solar furnaces, photovoltaics, refrigeration and air conditioning, production of hydrogen and water desalination.  Lecture material will be supplemented with demonstrations conducted by the class as a group.

This text is out of print but arrangements have been made to make available photo copies of selected pages.  Material will come in the form of 8 ½ x 11 pages punched for a three ring binder.

Supplementary material prepared by the instructor will be distributed during lecture periods.

EVALUATION AND GRADING :

A.    Undergraduate Students

B.     Graduate Students (Consult Instructor)

C.     Final exam is comprehensive and optional and its grade will be used to replace the lowest Test grade.  

Test grade:            A=90% - 100%, B=80% - 89%, C= 70% - 79%, D=60%-69%,     F =>60%            

REQUIREMENTS FOR GRADUATE CREDIT:
An additional research paper will be required and assigned on an individual basis for those seeking graduate credit.

ATTENDANCE:
You are expected to attend class.  Quizzes are given through out the semester and there is no make up for any missed quiz.  Make up tests are not allowed without either prior approval, a doctor’s certificate or the Dept.
head’s approval.
