This concentration, under the Environmental Science and Technology major, looks at solid waste deposited on land and in water, sometimes causing serious environmental problems.  Major issues of waste management include problems and  benefits associated with landfilling garbage and with the need to reduce the waste stream.  Wastes may also be handled  as a resource. Major concerns when assessing waste management problems and solutions are 1) environmental quality:  managing waste to avoid polluting air or soil/water resources or introducing toxics or pathogens into the food chain; 20 organic waste as energy resources:  studying incineration as an alternative to landfilling and organic wastes as a source of fertilizers.
