Application Information

Review of applications begins March 1st for those interested in the Fall semester.  We must receive all of the following:  a completed application form, official GRE scores (and TOEFL for international students), official transcripts, and three letters of recommendation.  We also request a personal statement. If you have a résumé, please send that as well. Where to send these materials is listed at the bottom of this webpage.

The personal statement should address a few things, in any order that you prefer.  One is why you are interested in I/O Psychology.  Second is why you are interested in our particular I/O Master’s program here at MTSU.  Third, while we do not require research experience or relevant work experience, if you have either we encourage you to briefly describe that.  Finally, you are welcome to add anything else about yourself that you’d like for us to know.

For your letters of recommendation, click here to obtain the form to include.

Since our review of applications begins March 1, your best chance to receive full consideration is to make sure we receive all your application materials at least a couple weeks in advance of that date. This helps give us time to get your file ready for review by March.  We typically start our review in early March, and finish our selection process later in March or April.  Late applications may be considered if they are received before the last available slots have been filled.

Most of the students we admit each year are selected from the March applicant pool.  We also have an October 1 deadline for those interested in starting in the Spring semester, but we have few (if any) open slots to offer during the October cycle.

Applicants from some states in the Southeast may be eligible to receive in-state tuition rates through an arrangement called the Academic Common Market (ACM).  For more information about your potential eligibility and how to participate in the ACM, click here.

The College of Graduate Studies website is an additional online resource that connects to some of the information described on this webpage.

When You Apply

You will apply to both MTSU's College of Graduate Studies, and to our I/O Program. You must submit materials to both places. Be careful to follow the directions below about all materials that must be submitted to each of the places.

Where to Send Your Application Materials

(1) Submit your Application for Admission online. Click here, to find the graduate student application. Important note: the general application deadlines listed on that link do not apply; the I/O program has it's own specific application deadlines (listed above on this page).

(2) Mail official copies of transcripts from every college you attended, and GRE scores (and TOEFL if international student) to:

College of Graduate Studies

Middle Tennessee State University

Murfreesboro, TN 37132

(3) Mail another copy of: (a) your transcripts and (b) GRE scores (and TOEFL if international student) to our program at the address below. Since you will mail official copies to the College of Graduate Studies, it is okay to send an unofficial photocopy (or an official copy) to our program. Also mail to our program: (c) your personal statement, (d) your letters of recommendation, and (e) your résumé (if available). Please send all of those materials to:

I/O Psychology Master's Program Applications

(4) If you are interested in applying for a Graduate Assistantship (GA) position, there is a separate application process that you must complete by the GA deadline (March 1 for Fall, October 1 for Spring) in order to qualify.

§        GA positions provide full or partial tuition assistance and pay a monthly stipend in return for you working a specified number of hours per week (usually 10 or 20).  The GA application deadline is March 1 if you are interested in a GA from the Psychology Department for the Fall semester.

GA application materials include the Psychology Department GA Application Form, the Psychology Department GA Supplementary Items form, a copy of your transcripts, GRE scores, your résumé/vita, your cover letter, and three letters of recommendation. You can find a more complete description of the GA application requirements and a copy of the two application forms if you click here.

Please submit your GA application materials as its own packet and mail to:
