Patrick M. McCarthy, Ph.D.
Dr. McCarthy is currently an Associate Professor of Industrial and Organizational (I/O) Psychology at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU). He has taught several undergraduate and graduate courses since 1987, including organizational change and development, leadership, group dynamics, motivation and work attitudes, principles of learning and training, applied behavior analysis and instructional design, and research methods. Dr. McCarthy has over 15 years experience as an organizational/management consultant. He has worked with a wide range of organizations in both the public and private sector during his tenure with the Center for Entrepreneurial Studies and Development (Morgantown, WV), and with the U.S. Office of Personnel Management’s Office of Systems Innovation and their Personnel Research and Development Center (Washington, DC). Additionally, he has served as an independent consultant on numerous occasions. Among Dr. McCarthy’s areas of consulting and research expertise are organizational performance diagnosis and development, leadership and managerial effectiveness, motivation, group facilitation, workshop/retreat design and facilitation (e.g., strategic planning and/or team-building), organizational change and culture issues, and work-family balance. His work has been published in several leading academic and practitioner-oriented journals and has been presented at over 15 national and international conferences. His clients for consulting and research have included Proctor and Gamble, Union Carbide, Corning, Pearl Drum Corporation, Tennessee Protection and Advocacy Incorporated, the U.S. Department of Defense, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, Three Mile Island Nuclear Power Plant, the Murfreesboro (TN) City School System, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Dr. McCarthy received his Ph.D. in industrial and organizational psychology from George Mason University (Fairfax, VA). He also has an M.A. in experimental and applied behavior analysis from West Virginia University and a B.A. degree from Drake University (Des Moines, IA).
