Student Involvement in Professional Organizations
Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) The MTSU chapter of SHRM is proud to be one of the most active chapters in Middle Tennessee. In recent years, MTSU's SHRM chapter has also won both the Merit Award and Superior Merit Award for being an outstanding chapter. Dr. Patrick McCarthy is the contact person for the chapter in the Psychology Department at MTSU. Our chapter frequently hosts guest speakers that talk about current issues in HR and provide useful career information to students. Our student chapter has close ties with the Nashville-based SHRM chapter. Over the past several years, MTSU students have received over half of our region's SHRM Foundation Scholarships. In 1999, an MTSU student was one of only two in the nation to receive SHRM's National Scholarship Award. Membership in SHRM is optional, but highly recommended. Membership provides students with access to a network of Human Resource professionals nationwide, and many other publications and resources.
Society for Industrial/Organizational Psychology (SIOP) The Society for Industrial/Organizational Psychology allows students to obtain a student affiliate membership. This gives students access to a vast network of other I/O professionals. Quarterly journals, with some sections geared specifically to graduate students, keep you informed of the latest events in I/O.
American Society for Training and Development The American Society of Training and Development (ASTD) is another association for students to become involved with to learn more about professional issues. Dr. Rick Moffett is the contact person for this organization.
Among the faculty in our department are members of each of the following relevant organizations: Southeastern Psychology Association (SEPA), Southeastern I/O Psychological Association (SEIOPA), The Academy of Management (AMA), The Southern Management Association, American Psychological Association (APA), American Psychological Society (APS), the Human Factors Society (and the Smoky Mountain Chapter) (HFS).
