  43.  They allow teachers to make class more interesting. It is an easier for teachers to provide the information.

  44.  Is. It helps to enhance learning by providing good communication between student and teacher.

  45.  Is important for content organization. Is very, very negative thing when teacher forgets how to teach & simply reads power points to students as if they can’t read themselves.

  46.  It is important for some students to take notes so they can stay focused on the material & retain more of the material. This is the only reason I don’t like the use of in class power point: slides however they are a good supplemental tool.

  47.  Is. The additional sources for study materials, notes & communication w/other students & teachers.

  48.  I believe it’s important b/c it  better relates to job society today and what they are expecting from individuals.

  56.  It’s easy.

  57.  Is. It allows students to be exposed to the fast developing technology that is out in the world today.

  58.  It helps pull together professor’s message. If something is not made clear to you, the info via web can be reviewed for better understanding.

  59.  Gives the student a visual association with the info presented in the classroom.

  60.  It appeals to multiple learning types and increases the ability to easily access information covered in class.

  61.  I believe that it is important to use as long as the instructor is familiar with the tools.

  62.  It is what’s happening in the workforce. Not only the Internet but also intranet is a means of training as well as communicating.

  63.  Should use every means possible, especially technologies that enhance learning.

  64.  Any way to get students exposed to technology is a good thing.

  65.  Is. It enables instructors to more aptly deal with classes of 100+ students.

  66.  In the recording field everything is high tech. Using technology to understand high tech things is invaluable.

  67.  My major would be impossible without it.

  68.  A person’s value to their future career is measured by what they can do—many careers are tech-based.

  69.  It tries to take the place of a teacher in some cases.

  70.  Is. It opens up many ideas on how to present a subject or course. Technology is here to make our lives easier and our knowledge greater.

  71.  It adds variety and diversness into the class. It is not as boring. It is a different way of class instead of the traditional way.

  72.  Is. We use it for our projects constantly.

  73.  Is. People can get a better grasp for the subject by learning at their own pace.

  74.  We teach computers. Computers do not teach us.

  75.  It provides access to previously unavailable material.

  76.  Both but teachers should interact with students and give more examples in class os outside class materials can be easier.

  77.  I believe that technology is key for future success. However course info is not high-tech. It is stupid they sholuld just tell us our assignment.

  78.  It helps explain things to see them on the computer and makes it easier to lave that link outside of class away from campus.

  79.  It is important, but shouldn’t replace interaction between professor and student. Web based instruction is more passive.

  80.  Is not. It usually takes away way too much class time as the instructor struggles to get the technology to work.

  81.  Without it MTSU cannot compete w/other mega universities for research.

  82.  It greatly enhances learning experiences and allows students who would not normally use that type of equipment as an educational aid.

  83.  Is important but not for every subject or class.

  84.  It is proven that it is used to buffer the fact that college students know jack shit!

  85.  Is not. Not everyone has time or access to a computer although we have them on campus many people have no time for extra work such as getting things of the Internet.

  86.  Is not. To a degree—I don’t have a computer at home & am taking 17 hours—It is hard to find time to check email everyday.

  87.  Is not. I have lost entire papers due to E-mail errors or being booted of the intenet.

  88.  Is. It helps students who learn in different ways, but you can’t forget the original ways of teaching.

  89.  It really does help, but they should offer a course for the teachers to take, so they know how to use it.

  90.  Technology pushes the envelope of human understanding and as much interaction as a student may receive the better his/her odds of competing in a society based on high technology.

  91.  It is important for me as a teacher to make learning more fun and interesting for my students, I can also use the computer to find lesson plans and ideas.

  92.  Is important because it gives alternative methods to classroom teaching that are valuable not to mention more stimulating.

  93.  Is not. I believe that I should be learning from interaction with my proffessors, taking their notes and listening to their words.

  94.  It is a good way to organize materials but at the same time teachers are not as prepared for class. All they have to do is pop in a disk and talk. I thing it takes work away from the teachers, which may sound like a good thing, but actually it hurts the students. Teachers that are “just talking from a screen” don’t show as much interest and enthusiasm as other teachers. Powerpoint has made professors LAZY! Students as well, notes are on the web, so why take notes?????????

  95.  Is not. The professor sometime forgets to teach and relies on the technology to teach.

  96.  Is. It allows more interaction with your major classes. It gives one a chance to actually do what they are learning in class.

  97.  Is. It prepares you for our technology world. At the very least you a little familiar with email, powerpoint, etc. You can use in your workplace.

  98.  It provides another dimension for learning and gives variety to lectures & presentations.

  99.  Is not. It distances the students from personal interaction with others & the teacher.

  100.  It further enhances the learning process. It also helps to familiarize students with technology present outside the classroom.

  101.  Is not. It makes the lecture & classroom much less personal & allows less room for questions & creativity.

  102.  Is important but it does not & will never have a big of impact as a hands-on and learning without technology.

  103.  Is not. It tends to reduce class participation and discussion of relavant topics to lecture. In some cases it has even detoured me from class with knowledge of power point presentations being on reserve or print are from professer’s web sites.

  104.  It is important as computers are part of the work place but computers should not take the place of human interaction.

  105.  Is. It’s starting to control almost every observable aspect of life. . .

  106.  Is not. We spend to much time getting materials off of the web to complete assignment.

  107.  It gives everyone equal access to the information.

  108.  Is. It allows the student a resource from which to learn when the pro is not available or helpful.

  109.  It gives the students an opportunity to learn outside of class.

  110.  I believe that if some professors were to somehow lose their power-point presentations then that educator would be completely handicapped.

  111.  Is not an important means of learning or teaching. It only make it easier for a teacher to deliver his/her material. Instead of writing on a board, they type it all up on the computer.

  112.  Is not. Computers are a hastle. They make instructor lazy.

  113.  When a person misses a class day, they can go online & get the missed notes.

  114.  It sucks. Technology and the sue of computers is an over rated concept. They’re alright sometimes for typen & shit, but I don’t think they are that significant. I like doing shit the old fashioned way. Hell, I could use a typewriter and be just as satisfied.

  115.  I live 36 miles from campus. Anything I can do at home via web would help me save time, money, etc.

  116.  Is not. It is not fair to those students who can’t afford a computer at home & work full time to attend school & can’t get to the computer labs during open hours.

  117.  It brings in other sources from great schools all over the country and probably all over the world. Also lets us hear from business people who are currently in the market place.

  118.  It facilitates communication between instructor & student and among students themselves.

  119.  Is not. We can do without it.

  120.  I believe this survey is just about taking on more school fees.

  121.  Is not. I think those monies would better be suited for something else like newer buildings, or lessen the amount of the fees.

  122. Is. The children in your classroom will use computers—you need to know to use them also.

  123.  Is not. 2001 or 3001, the most important person in the classroom is the instructor, her body language, environment, and her ability to coordinate all resources. Dr. Means and Dr.. Brasher are master teachers as far as using technology in the classroom. The other instructors spend so much time setting up the presentation that ½ the class is gone.

  124.  It helps people have a visual to learn from—not just the auditory. It also offers a chance to use resources and methods other than lecture—also the we has a huge amount of information available.

  125.  Is not. It detracts sometimes, and substitutes inappropriately, for needed learning information in class.

  126.  In general, master classrooms are a waste of money—they really do not affect learning enough to justify the money.

  127.  Is. It allows students to complete homework assignments quickly and effectively.

  128.  Teachers got by without it before. Tuition should go for higher professor salaries and not a bunch of unused equipment.

  129.  Is not important because I understand teachers better if they speak rather than getting my information from a computer. Computers tend to mess up and then I get confused.

  130.  Is. But it lessens the teacher/student interaction, and some of the teachers are slow about posting exam results and the next weeks assignments, causing students to stress.

  131.  It helps to support the info that was gained in class and give physical evidence to back it up.

  132.  I would rather learn from my teacher.

  133.  The only time I find instructional technology negative is when instructors use it solely & do not elaborate on material presented.

  134.  Is. It creates a gateway for better learning that connects the teacher and student.

  135.  Is not. People have been learning forever and there have been very smart people come from normal schools. Instructional technology makes the class a little more exciting, but doesn’t exactly teach more.

  136.  It’s unnecessary, people take this technology issue too far. What happened to good teachers? I think teachers are trying to get out of doing their job by letting some bullshit computer do all the work for them. I pay my money to encounter good teachers regardless if the technology they have in a classroom.

  137.  If the teacher does not know hot to teach it doesn’t matter what neat gadgets he/she has to show.

  138.  There’s not enough classes taught on how to master the computer skills needed.

 Responses to question #37:

  1.  One of the nicest things I ever find in the learning process is instructional technology. I hope that every major or department of Agribusiness and Agriscience will equipped with such instructional technology. My minor is economics, which allows to enjoy and take advantage of the instructional technology. I have heard classmates, in Agribusiness & Agriscience, complaining about the incompleteness of their notes due to the blackboard taking notes.

  2.  The use and availability of instructional technology has not affected my learning. I am enrolled in a classroom that I paid a “technology fee” for and the room has an empty compute box. We are paying for something we are not getting! I am an education major and get no technology-based learning in my classes, so what it comes down to is that I pay for the students that have classes in the BAS and the Mass Comm. Building to have technology-based learning.

  3. I am pleased with the library and the computers there, though. I also have an email account at MTSU.edu and that is helpful.

  4. A classroom in KOM has an empty computer cabinet. No computer, no overhead—it has no technology to offer the class—it just takes up room. The overhead screen doesn’t retract. The dry erase boards are fixing to fall off of the wall.

  5.  My participation & relations to classmates was not affected because I would have done these things w/o the prof. prompting.

  6.  Very important to have a overall understanding of a person to understand there work of all kinds (personal).

  7.  All students should have access to a computer at home with web access. If students do not have the funds to purchase a computer, they should be able to rent one from the university.

  8.  This survey should be done so that each master classroom course could be rated not just lumping them all together.

  9.  Should not replace teachers, books, and other resource materials.

  10.  If professors use this tech. They need to be able to explain this process or provide assistance/help.

  11.  Instructional tech. Is good but can be bad when it’s the primary way of teaching & communicating.

  12.  Having classes that are solely web based is like having classes w/no teacher, just t4ests. Students need personal guidance.

  13.  Not everyone owns a computer or is adequate in internet technology, therefore the web should not be a full way of communication between a student/teacher.

  14.  Half the class is usually wasted by the time the prof. gets the “wonderful” instructional technology working.

  15.  Also presenting material is visual and allows me to view concepts to learn at a different level.

  16.  Negative: web server is down a lot!

  17.  Power point has been a great way to communicate specially with class notes.

  18.  Some courses could be taught entirely through the web and some courses benefit most from interaction through live lecture.

  19.  Those without computers in the home do not find online course an attractive alternative.

  20.  I do not like communication via e-mail!!

  21.  I would suggest raising the fee for better technology and more labs.

  22.  More web based courses would be great for non-traditional students who have little time to spend in classrooms at specified times.

  23.  I love CourseInfo. Wish we could get more teachers to use it.

  24.  I love it. I could pull up the entire semesters power points to study for my final in RATV 221. I know the extra information along w/paying attention in class helped me get an A.

  25.  I am a comuter student. It would be better for me if frank accounts and the S drive were accessible from home.

  26.  The schools should not increase access fees for their technology.

  27.  As students, we should have acess to computer labs for free. All technology based learning should be free. We shouldn’t have to pay $50 with tuition just for acess to labs.

  28.  The photography & art departments need this technology since it is a visual community.

  29.  I have a severe problem with the maintenance of the computers in the labs and library. No routine maintenance is done to insure they are working properly. TRAIN THE LAB ASSISTANTS.

  30.  Looking forward to more courses strictly online. I am a non-traditional student and have little time.

  31.  Computes in MC’s should be faster—class time is wasted waiting on things to load.

  32.  It is important to limit compulsory material and avoid confusion +time pressures on computer-based assignments outside class.

  33.  Having a course completely online alienates the student from the instructor. Interaction between student/student as well as student/teacher is non-existent or very little.

  34.  This school needs to move its technology to modern times. The network here is embarrassing when you work with other organizations.

  35.  I’ve sat under power point presentations and laser disc documentaries and been bored to tears. A good teacher makes technology just a tool.

  36.  When a student interacts one on one with something, the material is easily understood.

  37.  Using technology is helpful when full access is available, but when a student must make arrangements and take extra time to gather assignments, this is not great at all.

  38.  I chose to transfer to MTSU b/c of the technology in the class rooms of the BAS.

  39.  All the dorms on campus need to have Ethernet-no dial-up connections something where the students do not need extra equipment.

  40.  If we are going to have the technology shouldn’t the professors know to use it? The class I took was good but ½ of the time the prof. was trying to figure out how to use the technology.

  41.  MTSU needs to wire Judd Hall to the Ethernet network.

  42.  I feel that course info is a good way to see the lessons, the grade, the communication with the proffesor and my classmates. I thing that it is a great idea. I like it, and it keep me organize. Thank you!

  43.  It need sound effect!

  44.  It would be nice to see all the classrooms with technology equipment in the future.

  45.  More examples, for example in my physics class we need more interaction in class and more examples explained.

  46.  Paying an addition tech fee is ridiculous we pay enough. Larger colleges have this technology for free. P. S. your campuss test is horribly inaccurate I write on the 300-400 level, but enrolled in DSE.

  47.  Rely to heavily on power-point. They put things on powerpoint & read it to us, they don’t teach it.

  48.  No more course info.

  49.  I am a technophobe/Libertarian.

  50.  I really don’t like when teachers don’t use e-mail; it makes it really tough to communicate.

  51.  I HATE using e-mail to communicate. It would be much easier for the teacher to say what they want you do. Instead you have to guess where to look for assignments. Teachers don’t know how to open attachments, they don’t know who sends them what you don’t know if they even read it. They can’t make corrections to papers so you know what was wrong. Plus, they email you stuff & expect you to do it short notice & computers aren’t available in dorms.

  52.  Instructional technology broadens the way we teach.

  53.  The computer is taking the place of a professor/student relationship and is illiminating a lot of writing skill requirements. Between my class and work schedule I do not have the time to go to the lab to check course info nor do I have the money to get internet access.

  54.  I believe teachers should keep in mind hose of use who do not have the benefit of a computer & Internet at home.

  55.  I think MTSU is doing a great job enhancing technology on campus, however, I think that having to pay for paper in some computer labs is not fair. Where is all of the technology fee going?

  56.  Nice Idea. Not very practical or personal.

  57.  I do not think that using calculators is a good thing because I feel that we should learn how to do math  problems on our own.

  58.  I have not taken a class outside a master classroom in the last 6 semesters.

  59.  I don’t believe anyone benefits from the over the web classes.

  60.  It makes teachers lazy.

  61.  I would rather read about a subject rather than read power point slides.

  62.  All the classes I have taken with technologies in the classroom, have worked out fine for me.

  63.  I like the use of technology, but I would not rely on the computer at all times. I enjoy the old fashion way of teaching/learning.

  64.  Need to set all dorms wired.

  65.  There should be no technology fee. Tuition should cover it.

  66. I have had a pretty positive experience w/the computer labs on campus, but would like to see more.

  67.  I don’t like instruction over the internet. It is not as personnel and hinders instructor-pupil communication. I would not take a web/internet based class.

  68.  I think technology is important in learning to make it in the world but a lot of times, teachers lose sight of their real job.

  69.  We shouldn’t allow technology to hinder us. Computer labs for e-mail & reference is important but master classrooms are not—to my field of study.

  70.  Teachers also do not put assignments on the web with adequate time to finish it.

  71.  It would be nice if instructors put their slides on s-drive so students could print them out instead of missing notes in class.

  72.  Yes No fee’s for technology get a letter, FL st school only pay 500 dollars a semester in state and have better technology.

  73.  Instructors abuse E-mail convenience. I have received E-mails that I needed two days before an assignment. I also get E-mail on weekends, when I do not want them.

  74.  I would like to know how much mis-appropriation of these funds occurs!

  75.  Because I am an economics major, I have many classes that nessesitate economic models (linear and exponential) that may require illustration. However I do not see technological uses as nessessary in say English specifically because said majors require interactivity and practice and not illustration.

  76.  I think that there is too much emphasis based on this type of teaching sometimes. It tends to not be very effective in certain courses.

  77.  What ever happened to the days of doing things out on a blackboard or dry erase board.

  78.  I feel many of these questions are self-evident positives. Most people realize the positive aspect of instructional technology.

  79.  I am completely for technology in the classroom. As a senior looking back on my college career, I can say that it has made a difference in my learning process. However, I do not think that a continuous to raise fees is necessary!

  80.  Please maintain the tech hardware better—I was unable to present a video I created because my group was unable to make the AV equipment in a Bus. Bldg. Classroom work.

  81.  Something needs to be done to enhance Chemistry/Biology buildings rather then building a courtyard and WASTING state & private funding on technologically advanced classrooms that the majority of older professors refrain from using.

  82.  The technology is only useful if it is up-to-date, available and functioning properly.

  83.  I have been in most master classrooms where the teacher NEVER uses the equipment. Also some teacher obviously do not know to use, or the equipment is broken.

  84.  Technology is great but it should not take the place of a real live teacher. I need someone standing there explaining information to me.

  85.  24 hour computer labs & library.

  86.  In order for the web-based classes to attract my attention, they need to become more structured.

  87.  Want free printing & Mass Comm lab open more w/attendant.

  88.  Charging to print is ridiculous! Hook my wallet up to an I.V. & drain me why don’t you?

  89.  All instructors should have to put reserve material from the library on the web.

  90.  It also shows that the instructor is willing to help & do all they can do for you.

  91.  I am currently enrolled in a class where the only technology available is an overhead projector and the white boards are falling off the wall. (KOM 202)

  92.  I have a course in which the overhead projector is the only available technology.

  93.  Need more, free access to technology less emphasis on internet.

  94.  Use tech better, to supplement class material, not substitute.

  95.  Teachers should know how to use all equipment. Teacher in service classes over technology use.

  96.  Totally web based classes do not help understanding.

  97.  To OIT—We have too many addresses & even more passwords to keep up with. It all needs to be consolidated.

  98.  I believe that if we are forced to pay a technology fee, then we should have the ability to use this technology. My Math 201-04 class contains 40 people, are placed in a class made for 25, 30 people and there is not computers.

  99. Understanding is not good w/out interaction w/the teacher—a WEB PAGE w/homework & work assignments is self learning—if depend solely on a computer then what are we paying for? I can go to the library & learn everything on my own comp. w/o paying.

  100. I like old fashion education and think it is the best way to learn.

  101. Technology can be beneficial, but should NOT, NOT, NOT, NOT replace the teacher.

  102. I feel that for as much money MTSU receives for technology a vastly superior e-mail program should be implemented. The student e-mail system is the worst I have ever used or seen.

  103. CourseInfo is relied upon too heavily in Nsg. Dept. when the web is used as he only means of retrieving course documents and assignments, instructors forget their job includes actual instruction.

  104. I dislike courseinfo it is for laze professors, so that we have to pay money to copy our notes off.

  105. Questions 28-33 are stupid because you don’t choose a class by how much technology is used you choose it because you need it to graduate.

  106. The interruptions from remote sites in tele classes are a problem.

  107. Not everyone has immediate access to the essentials of instructional technology.

  108. I do not like when teachers use web as primary source. I do not always have access to comp. & it takes a lot of extra time to do things like that.

  109. I find it unfortunate that I know hot to use a master classroom better than 9 out of 10 of my teachers.

  110. How do you help students’ get computers, even used ones, for personal use.

  111. I would like an art building that is not a barn, and access to more photographic equipment before more computers.
