MTSU 1998 IT Survey: Faculty Comments

I believe that instructional technology (is or is not) important because:

It provides access to more, up-to-date information.

It allows us to access more information than ever before. We can collect more material because research time is shorter.

It is the only way to handle the vast amount of information.

It broadens opportunity to access and present information and material. However, it should be seen as a tool and not a lifestyle.

Advantage of 24-hour availability of the Web is a major plus.

It provides an additional means of presenting material more up-to-date, thus more interesting to today's students.

It provides information at one's fingertips and enables instructors to illustrate their lectures in a dynamic way.

Without first-rate technology, we would fall hopelessly behind in our fields. Our instructional materials come with text, audio CD-ROM, interactive CD-ROM, and video cassettes. We cannot teach the courses without it.

It encourage the use of more current information in teaching and learning.

Up-to-date.

It keeps us from getting chalk on our fingers and suits. (Just kidding!) Saves time and allows presentation of more current data in my classes.

Expands knowledge available.

Allows access to information that is very relevant to my classes. I can supplement my text in meaningful ways.

It is in the real world; it enriches the experience of theoretical modeling; enables access to much more information/applications.

It fosters interaction.

Student interaction is better because they can participate.

I.T. is a tool that fosters student interaction when used well.

Another method by which students can learn by participating; students feel comfortable with this method of learning and will need to use computers in their jobs.

It is also nice to be able to do something interactive, as a break from, say reading a text book.

It provides an interactive method for facilitating learning.

Students expect/need it.

It is a valuable tool and I am expected (by the students) to know how to use it.

We are preparing students to be classroom teachers in an era where students are far more technologically literate than the teachers are.

Students seem to need the bells and whistles to stay interested and keep their attention. Unfortunately, the software is lacking in my area, so I continue to rely on videotapes.

It meets the needs of learners with different learning styles.

It gives the students an independent channel to obtain information and meets individual learning style differences.

Learning requires viable options to lectures.

It allows the use of simultaneous input channels to illustrate and present concepts.

It engages non-aural learning styles.

It allows students a different avenue for learning.

Is important because it can present material in very visual ways that may communicate better to some students.

Current students are almost totally "graphics-oriented" and many (most?) people learn more effectively if they can view an image related to the material they are hearing from a teacher.

It enables me to illustrate what I used to only talk about. It also reinforces learning visually.

It may be effective at matching instruction to student learning styles.

It's the "Way of the World."

It is the way of the future.(8)

It is the "way of the world"!

It keeps us in tune with the times and shows learners that we are.

It is necessary for education and to be educated in the 21st century. We no longer have a choice. We cannot ignore the advancing use of technology in the classroom.

This technology is a tool for use in the way things are being done and will be done. We must be current in the use of technology for the sake of our students.

It is unavoidable in today's society! Students have access to technology at home and in the schools. To be effective, higher education must be on the cutting edge of the use of instructional technology.

The world uses technology--so must we.

That is the way the world is going. We must keep up. It is imperative to the students and faculty.

It's the only way we can keep up with technology and the knowledge in our world.

All faculty and students need to be able to communicate on a technological level today, tomorrow, and in the future.

Computers are a fact of life.

We are more and more likely to be faced with technology in the "real world".

It is the future for our classrooms and students. It can expand possibilities and increase efficiency.

The future is technology and we must all learn to use it in order to communicate with others who are using it.

Students are integrating technology into other facets of their lives, and as instructors, we should use available resources to better educate our students.

Everything is computerized.

It is essential in "real world" application. It expands opportunities for information and feedback. It is the communication method of the 21st century!

It offers a much broader view of the reality of today's world. Additionally students have grown up with A/V technology and are comfortable with it, react positively to it, and maintain a much higher interest in it as compared with more traditional teaching methodology.

It is what is happening in the "real world".

It conveys to students that we are part of the information age, not hidden away in our "ivory tower".

It saves class time/increases productivity.

It allows instructors to save class time and concentrate on the meaning of concepts rather than the calculations involved in measuring them.

It helps reduce the workload in teaching.

It increases my productivity.

Students will need it in their careers.

We need to set an example to the students that technology is important and they need to learn about it to get a job.

Our students need to become proficient in the use of nicer tools as they continue in their education and in the workforce.

Many reasons. One of these is that students will need these skills in the workplace.

It is an integral part of industry and students need to prepare.

It provides use of technology that will/can be used in other settings. Also provides basic technology skills that can be transferred.

We must produce a product (graduate) who is familiar with the latest technology. Without "instructional technology" we are not likely to graduate students who are technologically literate.

Students will be required in all careers to be familiar with and to use technology. We need to at least introduce them to various forms of technology that's available.

Students need to learn to live and work in the technology world. More information faster!

Students and teachers need to understand all avenues of technology to be more informed and productive.

It is the world students will work in.

The corporate world demands proficiency and it saves time.

It is important. We are preparing teachers who will work in the 21st century classrooms and they need to be familiar and comfortable with the technology that will be available to them.

Computer skills are needed to get and stay employed.

To be competitive in the work force, our students must acquire basic skills.

Our students need to be exposed enough to be comfortable with it as it's what the real world uses.

It is absolutely necessary for students to acquire these skills to be successful after graduation.

Necessary to keep up with industry requirements.

Students need to learn basic computer skills to function in today's society. They also need to learn how to access information through the Internet.

The world is using it. We have to be realistic when we are preparing students to function and succeed in the world.

Students need to become adapt in using technology to communicate, problem solve, plan, etc., and classroom exposure facilitates that. It fosters active learning that carries over into non-academic and professional life.

It provides insight and practical use of various applications, media concepts, etc. that are being used in business today.

It's one of many tools.

It is a tool and just like any other tool, it is as good as the person who is using it.

It is important but it is not a panacea for education's problems.

Selectively important but not always the best way to do things.

By definition, any technology we use to achieve instruction is important to us; ones tools are always important to a craftsperson.

It is a toy in many cases to entertain but it does carry a lot of information if you have the time to find it.

Simply, it adds to our teaching toolbox. It isn't a easy cure-all, but it does have applications that allow students to learn in ways that they otherwise cannot.

It adds to other methods: does not take the place of the teacher/facilitator.

It is only adjunctive - not a replacement - must keep that perspective.

Teachers need to use a variety of teaching tools to present the material to the students.

It supports, enhances, and/or improves learning.

It gives the students an independent channel to obtain information and meets individual learning style differences.

It supports learning.

It enhances learning and presentations.

Some concepts and facts are better presented and understood with it.

It should facilitate instruction.

It helps to enhance the learning experience and the ability of students and faculty to stay abreast of technology.

It can be used to enhance instruction.

It is not just important, it is imperative!!

Improves learning.

Only because it enables you to improve your instructional strategies and delivery systems.

It provides another medium for teaching and learning.

Overall, it positively helps students learn. Also it enables the faculty the opportunity to get help in learning how to use technology.

Has the possibility of enhancing the student's knowledge of the subject.

It increases the effectiveness of teaching.

Enhancement of subject covered - visual aids.

It greatly facilitates teaching and learning in and out of the classroom.

It improves both the quantity and quality of learning.

It is very essential. Materials can be presented more effectively.

It may improve teaching and learning.

It aids me in reaching the goals and objectives of my courses.

It enhances the entire learning/teaching process. Also, it is the current method of doing things.

It certainly enhances the way information is presented as well as access to so many more materials.

It's a good communication tool.

It is an important information source and a good communication tool.

It is important to learn to communicate and use these necessary resources.

Improves communication.

It provides an improve method for student/faculty and student/student communication.

It allows for better communication of information between students and faculty.

It is more effective means of communication.

It increases interpersonal communication--email.

It helps facilitate communication skills.

Better communication with my students, many of whom work during the day.

It increases student interest/attention/motivation.

It is interesting for both the instructor and the student. You can't teach them if you can't keep their attention. It is one more tool among many.

It helps keep the students interested.

Necessary training for our students! Raises attention levels and enhances learning environment. Demonstrates competency.

It gives variety.(2)

It also makes for more interesting classes.

It motivates the students more than the traditional "talking head".

It helps to get and keep the students' interests. Everything seems to placing more emphasis on technology. We, in education, should be as well.

Many of our students appear to appreciate a variety of teaching methods. This is especially true in the "longer" classes.

It's overrated.

It is important but I believe its merits are often overrated. Beware of dumbing down education via instructional technology. There are also much greater resource needs at this university.

It is sometimes overrated. It removes the focus on content and allows flash and sparkle to replace it. How many pointless PowerPoint presentations will I have to sit through in my life. Too many I fear!

Discipline Specific Comments

Computers can do things in physics that are completely not feasible without them.

All of our apparel design classes are now computerizes as the majority of apparel manufacturers can now afford CADD systems.

Very important to nursing students. Faculty are required to use technology in our field.

Other Comments

It has forced me to rethink and reevaluate my instructional approach and the instructional material.

It is fun!

It can reinforce what is said in class.

Is important for some things and discursive for others.

It has the potential for moving the old traditional education process from a teacher-focused inflexible structure to a highly flexible and integrated "learning environment". Without the complete integration of instructional technology into the education process this environment will not be achievable and what we call "educational" institutions today will lose their current dominate position as providers of educational services. To me it is exciting but also it is a matter of institutional viability.

Distance learning must become a Web-accessible process.

Many avenues are open to instructions that reach out, all of which enrich the teaching experience.

Is a vital issue that runs the risk of creating a greater schism in classes than currently exists. We always have students with varying skill levels and (embrace of) or (fear of) instructional technology widens the gap between prepared (successful) students and those who are likely to fail.

It's what's valued.

It offers unique and new opportunities for learning and teaching.

Provides instructional variety; allows demonstration of real life situations to illustrate concepts; assists me in instruction lessons; increases contact/individual assistance with my students; provides opportunities for students to practice concepts learned in class; provides quick access to huge amounts of information.

Visual learners and large classes.

It allows students to work at their own level of development and at their own pace.

It helps us keep up with information technology and to better reinforce basic concepts to the students.

It offers interesting and efficient ways to present material and to provide access to many new resources.

Is not important because the effort of the student is still the primary determinant of learning.

The Web is a convenient and valuable resource.

It can expedite - I plan to use Web pages, etc. when I learn how. It also opens avenues and resources.

… there is so much crap out there on the Web and no truly manageable search engines that to encourage students to use the Web to do research is highly problematic.

Important if adequate and appropriate orientation to use. Available presentations are most often brimming and showing all the bells and whistles but lacking in down-to-earth functionality. Time constraints and current assignment is a major roadblock to attending workshops and practicing new skills.

It keeps one current and helps modernize instruction. I am limited, mostly self-taught.

Assists in storing, retrieving, and presenting of material; tool for students to research and present materials.

Its availability will lead to creating and helpful use. There are goods uses and wasteful uses that waste time and energy and aren't effective.

It promotes efficiency and expands out the breadth of knowledge.

Opens doors to students not otherwise available--encourage students to take greater responsibility for their education--provides students with alternative ways of learning.

The world we live in uses it and it can save time and present material more clearly. Also, it can change the stimuli for learning which helps keep students' attention.

More and more research resources are being converted to electronic format. In some areas, government information for example, resources are available only in electronic format. Students and faculty without technology skills will fall further and further behind in the search for knowledge.

It is imperative to stay current as well as deliver information to students in an interesting way.

It expands the pedagogical domain for most subject areas. MTSU has the opportunity to turn technology into core competency and become recognized as a leader in the area. All we need is greater commitment from the administration and faculty.

It is our responsibility as a university to provide cutting edge instruction and technology is a viral part of that today. If we don't teach our students how to use the technology related to their chosen fields, we are not providing an adequate education (especially TODAY). By using the technology in the classroom, we inspire student to learn more about it on their own.

There is a world of information via the use of technology. Yes, instructional technology is important because needed information is found by just the touch of the fingers. Valuable world wide information can be located in a few minutes which draws people who are miles apart - closer together.

We are moving fast and must keep up the pace.
