I think it is more of a distraction than an educational tool sometimes

Getting a textbook with a disc can overwhelm you with information. Technology can sometimes complicate instead of simplifying.

I do not have enough background knowledge to take computerized classes at this time. I am enrolled in such a class but dropping it today.

I think it could be a little more interactive. It seems when you have a class that uses it there is little or no class participation.

What I really disagree with is having a computer take the place of students interacting with the instructor.
I felt the questions were "loaded" so that we encouraged further computer classrooms because of efficiency. They are efficient but they are not what make a class a good class. They should "enhance" only and not take away from discussions, teamwork and other "old fashioned" effective ways of teaching.

I feel like Power Point is overused. Many times I could not even show up for class, just get PP slides and still pass the course. They should be a support item not the course. I can read the book and PP slides on my own, but I come to class to learn from the teacher and their knowledge on the class subject. For this reason I very much dislike PP
I have had a professor who presented classroom material strictly from the slides without providing an understanding of when, why, or how such information should be used. (Example-QM261-criteria for knowing when to select proper formula weak).
While the technology is wonderful, instructors tend to rely on the technology to teach instead of using their abilities. Tends to create laziness.
All projects in the BAS building are not functioning well. Students sitting at the back usually can’t see anything and those in front often have to strain their eyes.
Instructional technology is good if the teachers are still interacting with the class and working some problems by hand, not just reading their slides to the class. We can do this at home.
Some teachers using slide presentations add a great deal of unnecessary material making it harder for the student. How much fun is if to copy slides for 50 minutes?
Professors who are technology or computer oriented should not ignore the fact that some students do not sit in front of a computer in all their free time and are not up to date in all technologies. In other words, move at a pace everyone can keep up with.
More instructor training is needed-most instructors do not take full advantage of master classrooms

Using computers only to do homework assignments is not a good idea, it is not fair for non-computer majors to be expected to perform as computer geniuses. It is also not fair for people who do not have ready access to computers.

These classrooms and computers get in the way. You can not take notes or exams because there is no room on the desk. It is very hard to take notes when some classes do not need the computers. The teachers still lecture every day.
Technology is great to have but I don’t believe in big classroom when student professor ratio is 45 to 1. I prefer small classrooms with as much technology as possible.
I love computers and I would love it if all classes were done using them. They have been very useful to me and others I know. I think it’s a great idea to use them in class.

The school and its instructors must not assume everyone is computer literate. I spend a lot of wasted time at the computer, since I am not proficient at with a computer. Sometimes 2-4 hours surfing the net looking for assignments. I love to do this but get very frustrated because of my lack of knowledge. You should have more classes for beginners.
Teach instructors how to use all the components provided. Some don’t even know how to turn off the lights.
I feel MTSU has a great technology program. It’s great to have all these computer labs and other buildings. Most of my time is spent on a computer when it comes to assignments. I have a tendency to type everything.

Being I work full time, I rarely have time to go to a computer lab. I would like more hours at a lab.

Professors in master classrooms do not always use the equipment and sometimes they get so distracted by it (how its working that day, etc) that it becomes ineffective as a teaching tool. I would much rather my money go towards another computer lab or more knowledge helpers in the computer labs.
It also makes some teachers extremely lazy. For instance I had one teacher that used the computer and projector, and all I saw of him all semester was the back of his head as he read the words from the screen.
Laser discs are neat and very helpful, so is email

Technology would be great if it worked! Most of the master classrooms were equipped with technology that did not work or the instructor could not work.
On question #17 I had Dr. *** for INFS 220 and he moved too quickly over the material. I took the class over with Dr. **** and understood it a lot more. I feel that a doctor should be able to use the equipment effectively when teaching others.
If new students were required to take courses designed to catch them up with present computer program usage in freshman year this would probably eliminate expertise problems.
Master classrooms are awesome and every room should be a master classroom.
MTSU’s computer technology (frank, Lexis-Nexis, etc.) should be more accessible to off campus students. Since the majority of students seem to live off campus.

The business and aerospace building and the new library were right on target especially because of the I.T. resources. Investments like this elevate the status of the university and increase the quality of education at MTSU.
More students should be required to learn different procedures on the computer and be educated on the different software packages, not just frank and the web.

I think it’s a waste of my money. People got educated long before these technologies. The computer lab won’t even let me use the color printer that I helped pay for. "Technology" in the classroom is how bad instructors look good.
I would enjoy different classes with computers in them, maybe some of the extra computers in the library could be used.

S-drive notes help tremendously because we can pay attention in class instead of worrying about getting the notes taken. I believe every teacher should use this method for our benefit and their convenience.
The instructor’s that do not use technology are harder to communicate with and understand.
Teachers should not become angry if a student if unaware of computer availability. Instructors should not obsess with their computers. It turns some students off.
I think MTSU has great computers as it is, but it could always be improved.

I think the technology should be kept in useable condition. Several of the classes I have been in where the computers were used more than a third of the time they couldn't be used.

If CAI’s and interactive disks are recommended/ required they should be operational and in a quantity so more than 1 person can watch them.
Some people cannot get to the computers till midnight or later on the weekdays, so web page assignments aren’t all that easy.
I think if the students are going to be paying for all this new technology, the money should be better allocated. One such example are the hours that facilities are open.
I am all for technology, however I am totally dissatisfied with the availability of these facilities. I don’t understand why we spend millions on a new library or computer labs which close early on Fridays and weekends or even weekdays for that matter. I feel these facilities should be available for students 24 hours a day. I bet students grades would increase tremendously. Not everyone goes home on weekend and some us would like to study on Friday nights.

For some classes instructional technology is not such a good idea. For example any type of accounting or math class should not use Power Point slides or any other type of technology. They should just use the white board.

I’m an agribusiness major. Many of my marketing classes have been in master classrooms. I feel there should be master classrooms spread throughout the campus and offered to all students and majors.

More computers
I wish more computer classes were part of the core courses.
Some type of day care / drop off where students could register for to leave Kids ages 0-kindergarten while we use the computers – it would help immensely. It would also create jobs for childhood education majors and make life a lot easier.

I think that there should be more computers for students closer to their areas especially if they live on the side of campus opposite of the business building and the library.

The fee is too high. Technology is constantly changing, I admit, but the fee should be held constant and changes made with that set amount of money.
I responded to question #10 because I feel that OIT needs to catch up to other schools and install Ethernet connections in the dorms!
Since the construction of the BAS building I have been overly grateful of the PC that we have access to. My only recommendation is, if possible, that we have access to other research tools that are available on the library PC’s besides just PALS from a remote location.
Need student Internet connections in classrooms for those students with laptop computers so that the may be used effectively to enhance learning ability.
There is enough fees. There should be plenty of funds to accomplish this without students being charged for it.

My only hesitation is that not every student has the means or access to a computer. It’s too easy to say--- use the computer at MTSU. Not easy to do though.

The major waste of paper and resources in computer labs concerns me. I’m sure every student in a large class would like a copy of Web tests or power point slides, but will this escalate the fees we pay? The cost of this technology may become a burden to the student.
