Funding for Liberal Arts Grant-Writers (FLAG) Pilot Program Guidelines Mission Funding for Liberal Arts Grant-Writers (FLAG) is a pilot program designed to encourage Liberal Arts employees to seek external grant support, both public and private, for appropriate research projects. FLAG will be funded by the Office of the Dean, College of Liberal Arts, with Facility and Administrative monies (i.e., “indirects”) garnered from current external grants in the college. For those meeting eligibility, FLAG can provide one payment within a 12 month period of up to $2000 per principal investigator (PI). This award can be received in addition to funding from the Center for Advancement of Research and Scholarship (CARS)— http://www.mtsu.edu/~research/cars-intro.html and other MTSU incentive programs. Outline— As part of the FLAG application process, the outline of the proposal should begin with a brief statement of the project and its significance. The outline should be sufficiently detailed to give reviewers an idea of what will be discussed in each major section and what will be required to make the proposal viable. If more than one PI is involved, the role of each should be made clear. PIs are urged to discuss the basic idea with a program officer before submitting. Timeline— The timeline should include at least monthly milestones along the path to submitting the proposal. Collaboration Full FLAG funding ($2000/PI) is potentially available for collaborative efforts. Justification and distribution of work must be addressed in the FLAG application. Additionally, only Liberal Arts’ PIs will be compensated and groups cannot exceed three members. Resubmissions Resubmission of previously unsuccessful grants is permitted in the FLAG program at the $1000 level. Explanation of how the new grant has been modified from past entries is required as part of the FLAG application process. Renewals FLAG Funding will be considered on a case-by-case basis for grant renewals. Review Review of FLAG applications is carried out by an interdisciplinary CLA committee. An attempt will be made to review as soon as possible and communicate the comments to the PIs. Reviewer comments are provided if the proposal is declined. There are no formal deadlines for submitting an application to this program; however, PIs are advised to leave adequate time for review. Distribution of Funds Payment will be authorized for PI(s) of approved FLAG projects at the point that the grant has been written and has received support of the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (for federal or state grants) or the Development Office (for private grants). Both offices have personnel that can assist in the writing process as well as internal forms which must be forwarded to the FLAG committee indicating that the grant application is complete and appears viable. PIs will need to work with the FLAG committee to ensure that the award distribution does not exceed pay allotments for teaching in summer sessions. PI Responsibilities PIs should keep the committee informed as to the acceptance status of the grant proposal.
