Health Education

An undergraduate major in Health Education encompasses the basic curriculum for those interested in the numerous health-related professions. Students wanting to teach will choose k-12 licensure, enhancing their preparation for leadership positions in schools. Community and public health education prepares graduates for positions in volunteer health organizations, health care centers, and public health departments. The Health Science and Technology concentration prepares students who have health care licensure to teach in high school health science programs. The department also offers minors in health and health/physical education which complement other academic disciplines such as psychology, sociology, biology, and human sciences. Students with bachelor’s degree in Nursing may count nursing hours as a minor toward a B.S. degree with a major in Health Education.

Physical Education
The Health and Human Performance Department provides facilities and faculty for a wide range of graduate, undergraduate, and specialized preparation for teachers, coaches, and administrators. The undergraduate major in Physical Education offers preparation for teaching in public and private elementary and secondary schools in Tennessee. Students wishing to obtain licensure in K-12 must minor in education with an additional concentration or minor in a related field.
Recreation and Leisure Services
A major in Recreation and Leisure Services prepares students to provide recreational services in public, park, industrial, and institutional programs. By contributing to the values which enrich people’s lives, recreation is taking its place with education, work and religion in serving the fundamental institutions in society. Field studies and internships in recreation give students opportunities to meet and work with professionals on a one-to-one basis. Students may choose to work from three concentrations- Outdoor, Administration, and Therapy. A minor in Recreation is also offered.
  • Three concentrations are offered: Outdoor Recreation, Recreation Administration, and Recreational Therapy
