q The UWC offers free writing assistance for any writing assignment in any class.
q Our staff of English graduate assistants will work with you to develop the skills you need to become a confident, competent writer by providing you with one-to-one consultations and helpful handouts.
q We offer many online services as well, including a Grammar Hotline for quick questions, an Email drop box as well as a Chat Room through WebCT for writing assistance, and a Web site filled with helpful handouts, exercises, and resource links for individual work.
q We have a free computer lab next door that allows you to immediately incorporate the suggestions and assistance that you gain during your session.
q The center in Peck Hall is open Monday through Saturday, and you can access our online services 24/7.
How best to use our services:
ü Come prepared:
§ Be on time for appointments in the center and online.
§ Know what your assignment is and bring or submit a copy of the assignment sheet if you have one.
§ Bring or submit whatever work you have done on your essay (for example, if you have an outline or a draft, have it available—a print or digital copy).
§ Be ready to ask specific questions about your essay.
ü Be reasonable in your expectations:
§ Plan ahead and make your appointment early so that you have time to revise with the help that you receive and so that you can come back again if needed.
§ Know that we can help you become a better writer over time, not in one thirty-minute session.
§ While your goal may be an A, ours is to help you progress as a writer.
ü Participate:
§ Ask questions.
§ Answer questions.
§ Take notes/Write on your essay.
§ Take ownership of your work.
If you’re ready to work, we’re here to help. In fact, you have the opportunity to come 6 days a week, but you may only have one appointment per day. Remember: you can come at any stage of the writing process with any writing assignment; you can even come to brush up on skills when you don’t have a paper due. The ability to communicate is the best asset you’ll walk away from college with—don’t miss this opportunity to develop your communication skills. Give us a try!
