All of the following properties apply if exponential expressions have like bases.

1.  Multiplying like bases: The base stays the same, the exponents are added.

Example:

We can verify by writing the expressions as factors to determine how many factors of x are in the product.

2.  Dividing like bases: The base stays the same, the exponents are subtracted.

3.  Zero Exponent:  For any real number  a , where  a  is not equal to 0,

Examples:

4.  Raising a power to a power:  The base stays the same, multiply the exponents.
