student volunteer with child

The Department of Elementary and Special Education and Project H.E.L.P. have teamed up to offer hands-on training in working with children who learn differently.

More than 200 MTSU students from eleven different majors spend a minimum of eight hours per semester in the center classrooms. Students observe activities, work in the classroom, and assist individual children with their assigned educational skills.

The children profit from the individual attention, and the students gain knowledge and experience on how to work effectively with children who have special needs.

In addition, the experience serves as a challenge to the MTSU students to examine their desire to teach. The children remind the students that teachers teach ALL children, those with and those without learning differences.

Students do their training hours between 8:30–11 a.m. and 1–3:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
