Civil War Photographs
The people shown in the images on this page are all reenactors, except
where specifically identified otherwise. Some are ferrotype images,
a period photographic process in which the image was printed on a tin plate.
Others are ambrotype images, another period photographic process in which
the image was printed on a glass plate. In both cases, the original is a
"mirror image" - the picture is reversed in the process, unlike modern
photography in which the image on the film is the same as what you see in your
viewfinder. Credit has been given to photographers where that information
is known and/or available.

This image is an ambrotype taken at the 140th Reenactment of the Battle of
Franklin, October 1-3, 2004.
I am standing in the back row on the far right, as
Junius Henri Browne.

This image is a ferrotype taken at the 140th Reenactment of
Gettysburg in the summer of 2003.
It shows Pvt. Foote (my son, who has since been promoted to corporal) on the
left, and me on the right as Junius Henri Browne. If you look at Pvt. Foote's
belt buckle, you will see that the "US" is reversed...a good example of what I
meant about the "mirror image". Thus, when we sat for the picture, my son
was actually sitting on the right, holding his rifle in his left hand, and I was
sitting on the left with my right foot slightly forward.
