PURPOSE:
This course
introduces the foundations of applied statistics by covering
descriptive statistics, probability and statistical
inference.
PREREQUISITE:
Two years of high school algebra and a mathematics Enhanced
ACT score of 19 or greater, or equivalent. If you
have not met these prerequisites, please let me know
immediately.
TEXT:
Elementary Statistics, A Step-by-Step Approach: A
Brief Version, 4th Edition. Bluman, 2008.
TOOLS: Always
bring a calculator to class. The
preferred calculator is the TI-83 or TI-84. You will
need a PC disk when we use MS Excel and Minitab. Minitab is
available 24-7 in the Computer Lab on the 1st floor of BAS.
GRADING: The course grade will
be based on the student’s performance on the following:
4 Comprehensive Exams (4 @ 100 points each)
400 points
Note: the 4th test is the final exam
Hand-in Assignments (homework, computer exercises, Quizzes)
100 points
Total 500 points
Final
Grade Structure:
A - 450 - 500 points
B - 400 - 449 points
C - 350 - 399 points
D - 300 - 349 points
F - 299 - 0
Graduate Students
should be prepared for additional question in the exams,
additional hand-in homework assignments, and a project.
STUDENT
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Class attendance, preparation, and
participation are required. Learning statistics is not a
spectator sport. Students having difficulties should seek
assistance from the instructor. Students are encouraged to
work together on problems that will not be graded. Students
are expected to be honest and ethical at all times. Students
with disabilities that may require assistance or
accommodations should let me know as soon as possible.
Students may also contact the Office of Disabled Student
Services (898-2783) with questions about such services.
ATTENDANCE: Attendance is expected. Attendance at
tests is required. The exam dates given will not change.
The only exception is if MTSU is closed (i.e. snow), then
the test will be rescheduled for the next scheduled class
meeting. No make-up exams are given. An unexcused absence on
an exam results in a grade of zero for that exam. If you
miss an exam, you must contact the instructor immediately
(prior to the exam is even better) to determine whether the
absence is excused. If you have an excused absence, then one
missed exam grade will be replaced by the last test (which
is comprehensive). (If you know of a conflict with a test
date, contact the instructor immediately.) Quizzes cannot
be made up. The lowest quiz score will be dropped. Quiz
content/Test content and hand-in homeworks will only be
announced in class. Do not expect them to be updated
on the webpage.
HOMEWORK: Promptly completing homework is a crucial
part of a successful experience in this class. Homework is
for your benefit. Homework is assigned for every class and
includes both material to be read and problems to be worked.
The assignment should be completed prior to the next class
period. This daily homework is not to be handed in.
HAND-IN
ASSIGNMENTS:
Hand-in assignments are due at the beginning of the class
period on the due date. Late assignments will lose 10
percentage points per day (including weekends). You may
always turn in assignments early; you can ask a secretary to
put the assignments in my office box. (Also ask for the date
and time you turn in the homework to be put on the paper
along with the secretary's initials.)
Math
Tutoring Lab:
Math Tutoring Lab (MTL):
Tutoring in rooms KOM 204 and 252 is available as free
service to MTSU students. Tutoring is conducted by Graduate
Teaching Assistants (GTA’s), work study aids, and a faculty
coordinator. The MTL will open on Tuesday, September 4, and
close on Thursday, December 13. Hours of operation are 9:00
am to 4:30 PM, M-TR, and 9:00 am to 3:00 PM on Friday. The
MTL is closed on weekends and MTSU scheduled holidays. Days
and times for tutoring specific topics are posted outside
MTL classrooms.
Financial Aid/Lottery:
To
retain Tennessee Education Lottery Scholarship eligibility,
you must earn a cumulative TELS GPA of 2.75 after 24
attempted hours and a cumulative TELS GPA of 3.0 thereafter.
A grade of C, D, F, or I in this class may negatively impact
TELS eligibility. Dropping a class after 14 days may
also impact eligibility. If you withdraw from this
class and it results in an enrollment status of less than
full time, you may lose eligibility for your lottery
scholarship. For additional lottery scholarship rules please
refer to your Lottery Statement of Understanding form,
review lottery scholarship requirements on the web at
http://scholarships.web.mtsu.edu/telsconteligibility.htm,
or contact the MTSU financial aid office at 898-2830.
ADA
Statement: If
you have a disability that may require assistance of
accommodations, or if you have any questions related to any
accommodation for testing, note taking, reading, etc.,
please speak with me as soon as possible. You may also
contact the Office of Disabled Student Services (898-2783)
with any questions about such services.

Daily Homework
These problems are for your own
benefit.
They are not
to be turned in.
If you have questions about them you may work with
your classmates, ask me for assistance, and/or ask some
questions during class.
(We will not have time to answer all the
questions in class.)
Please use this sheet to mark off the problems that
you have successfully completed, those we have worked in
class, and those you have questions about.
Answers to
many of the odd numbered problems are in the back of the
book. Please check
your answers for accuracy. An * indicates that I like the
problem enough to point that out to you.
