Syllabus PURPOSE: This course introduces the foundations of applied statistics by covering descriptive statistics, probability and statistical inference. PREREQUISITE: Calculus I. If you have not met this prerequisite, please let me know immediately. TEXT: TEXT: Investigating Statistical Concepts, applications, and Methods, First Edition. Allan Rossman and Beth Chance, Thompson/Brooks/Cole, 2006. ISBN 0495050644 (Paperback) ***This can be purchased with Minitab.
TOOLS: You will need to bring to class
a calculator which has the ability to complete statistical computations,
the TI-83, TI-83 Plus, or TI-84 graphing calculator are good options -
though they are not required. We will use
Minitab and MS Excel.
You can rent Minitab from e-acadamy. See:
http://www.minitab.com/education/semesterrental/default.aspx ATTENDANCE: Attendance is expected. Attendance at tests is required. The exam dates given will not change. The only exception is if MTSU is closed (i.e. inclement weather), then the test will be rescheduled for the next scheduled class meeting. No make-up exams are given. An unexcused absence on an exam results in a grade of zero for that exam. If you miss an exam, you must contact the instructor immediately (prior to the exam is even better) to determine whether the absence is excused. If you have an excused absence, then one missed exam grade will be replaced by the final exam. (If you know of a conflict with a test date, contact the instructor immediately.) HOMEWORK: Promptly completing homework is a crucial part of a successful experience in this class. Homework is for your benefit. Homework is assigned for every class and includes both material to be read and problems to be worked. The assignment should be completed prior to the next class period. This daily homework is not to be handed in. HAND-IN ASSIGNMENTS: Hand-in assignments are due at the beginning of the class period on the due date. Late assignments will loose 10 percentage points per day (including weekends). You may always turn in assignments early; you can ask a secretary to put the assignments in my office box. (Also ask for the date and time you turn in the homework to be put on the paper along with the secretary's initials.) IMPORTANT DATES:
The MTSU/NSF Computer Science, Engineering, and Mathematics Scholarships Program is accepting applications from MTSU full time students who are majoring in Mathematics and who qualify for work-study. The scholarship provides $2,500 for tuition, books and other school related expenses. Please contact Dr. Xiaoya Zha for further information. {Top} |
