You have been assigned to do two sets of critiques, each set concentrating on a different empirical theory. Each set should review two scholarly communication articles connected to the same theory. Note that empirical theories are tested by gathering data, often of a quantitative nature, and by measuring variables. If an article does not contain variables and data, it does not qualify for this assignment. The articles should all be drawn from recognized communication journals in our library.
Each critique should contain NO MORE THAN 2.5 pages of summary and evaluation, plus cover and reference pages. You are to write tightly and concisely, packing the greatest amount of information into your papers. All papers should follow APA style to the letter, including a cover page and reference page.
Each critique should include a brief summary of the literature reviewed by the researcher. This literature should show how the scholarly article is connected to -- and how it attempts to expand, modify, or question -- a major empirical theory. You should then present a summary of the author's hypotheses or research questions and analyze how the hypotheses are operationalized in the research design (be sure to identify the type of research design). You should also summarize and comment on the validity of the author's conclusions. The critiques should discuss flaws and strengths in the research design and should assess the article's contribution to theory, if any.
For an example of two good critiques on a single theory, click the links below. Note, however, that APA style has changed since these were written (italics are used instead of underlines; hanging indents are used in reference lists.) Also, I do not recommend that you cite dates for sources you do not include in your reference list; paraphrase and use only last names.
