Family
This is Dr. Mc's lifetime passion, love and involvement! She loves family - her own, other families and the very idea of family -those with whom she has, by birth or choice, an enduring loving and caring relationship. Above are her husband, Phillip, and the three (Steven, Michelle and Michael) of their five children that she contributes to this family. Celesia, her husband Kevin, and Phillip, Jr. are not pictured here.
This program is designed to enhance the quality of life for young parents ages 12 to 21 years of age. It has special features that make it particularly culturally appropriate for young parents of African decent. The Nashville project is three-prong in its implementation in that it involves in-home, in-office, and via internet interaction between counselor and client. The project partners involve The Centers for Family Life, The Social Work Department and Office of Information Technology at Middle Tennessee State University and The Nashville-Davidson County Juvenile Court.
Dr. Shaw-McEwen provides workshops, keynotes, and on-site visits on the following topics: (1) Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Prevention (2) Prevention and Cultural Competence (3) Prevention Programming for High Risk Youth (4) Designing Mental Health and Substance Abuse Prevention Programs for African-American Families (5) The Role of Parents in Prevention (6) Prevention Strategies for Parents of African-American Children and Youth (7) Learning Styles: Impact on Service Delivery to Youth-of-Color (8) Grant Writing (9) Cultural Considerations in Managing Non-profit Organizations (10) Leadership: What's Your Style? Biographical SketchSharon Shaw-McEwen, B.S., M.S.S.W., Ed.D. Dr. Sharon Shaw-McEwen is a national consultant and the Chief Executive Officer of the Centers for Family Life in Nashville, Tennessee. The Center has developed a model, multi-focused prevention program for African-American families. Dr. Shaw-McEwen has been an Expert Consultant for the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) in Washington, D.C.. and has consulted with several Washington, D.C. based consultant firms that contract with CSAP. She provides technical assistance to substance abuse, mental health, and educational programs across the country who are working with African-American families and children. Sharon is the former Director of Prevention Services, for the Tennessee alcohol and drug agency. She has taught the Counseling Diverse Populations course in the Human Resources Department, at Vanderbilt University, in Nashville, and is currently an Associate Professor of Social Work at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, TN. Dr. Shaw-McEwen holds the Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology (minors in Psychology and Speech) from Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois; the Master of Science in Social Work from the University of Tennessee, Nashville; and the Doctor of Education degree with a focus in administrative leadership and human resource development from Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee. Dr. Shaw-McEwen, a native of Humboldt, Tennessee, is the wife of Mr. Phillip McEwen, an executive with the Hoover Corporation. She is the mother of five children and a member of First Baptist Church, East Nashville. She has enriched her life experiences through extensive travel, both at home and abroad. She has been a consultant on several federal task forces , grant review committees and has presented workshops and keynotes at numerous conferences focused on mental health, substance abuse and education issues. She was nominated to serve on the 1988 Health and Human Services Alcohol, Drug and Mental Health National Advisory Board as an advisor to the Secretary; she served as a consultant and presenter in the prevention section of the 1988 White House Conference for a Drug Free America ; she served on the 1996 Social Security Representative Payee System federal task force; and now serves on a White House Drug Policy Advisory Committee. She holds and has held memberships in numerous professional and civic organizations. Dr. Shaw-McEwen was the 1988 Woman-of-the-Year for the Nashville Chapter of the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women's Clubs, Inc.; the 1988 Nashville and Southeastern regional New Soror-of-the-Year of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority; the 1992 recipient of the Outstanding Service Award given by the Tennessee State Caucus of Black Legislators; and a `95 and `96 faculty top five finalist for the MTSU Public Service Award. "Dr. Mc" is the 2001 recipient of the MTSU John Pleas Distinguished Faculty Award and the 2001 Ebony Achievement Faculty Award. She was also the MTSU 2001 selectee for the prestigious Bryn Mawr Summer Leadership Institute for Women in Higher Education. (see Resume link on top left side) Back to Top
