This page includes Step-by-Step instructions to use Minitab to use the Stepwise Regression for the Water/Temperature/Mowing Time example.  

Example: Assume that during a three-hour period spent outside, a person recorded the outside temperature, the time they spent mowing the grass, and their water consumption.  

Use Minitab to find the Stepwise Regression feature to model water consumed based on the temperature and the time they spent mowing the grass.  Use the data given below.

Preliminaries: Entering the data. 

• Enter the Temperature data in column,1, Time Mowing in column 2, and Water in column 3.  Put the category names in the title row.

  Procedure:   

1.   Select Stats>Regression>Stepwise

2.   For Response select in 'Water Consumption' and for Predictors
      select your variable names for 'Time Mowing' and 'Temperature'

3. For Predictors to include in every model: select 'Temperature'

4. Select Options

• Check the boxes next to Fit intercept and Display PRESS and predicted R-Square  
• Select OK 
• Select OK again
• Save the project. Select File>Save Project As and name the project Stepwise.
