Unit Title: Aging
Grade: 7
Goals
The students will:
- Use
art as a means to depict the physical changes that occur in aging.
- Examine
personality stereotypes associated with the elderly.
- Understand
the role advertisements play in stereotyping the elderly
- Determine
how current music has depicted the elderly
- Analyze
the ways in which the elderly interact with other members of the family
- Realize
the possibilities for a productive life in old age
Instructional Procedures
- Students
create their own self-portraits using a variety of art mediums and draw
pictures of what they expect to look like when they are 70 years of age.
Discussion on differences between portraits. (Goal 1)
- Discussion
based on students’ differing perceptions, ideas, and feelings related to
the issues and personalities in the book, Grandpa. (Goal 2)
- PowerPoint
presentation spotlighting famous people over the age of 65. In small
groups, students describe the personality of each person spotlighted.
(Goal 2)
- Students
locate advertisements that show how society depicts the elderly. In small
groups, students will share their advertisements and develop a public
relations campaign to present a more positive view of the elderly. (Goal
3)
- A
variety of songs will be played related to the elderly (“When I’m 64” –
Beatles; “It Was a Very Good Year” – Sinatra, etc.) Students will share
their opinions through discussion about the meanings of the words and how
the elderly are depicted. (Goal 4)
- Role
playing to analyze how the elderly interact with members of the family.
Several reenactments will take place based on students’ impressions,
opinions, positive and negative stereotypes, and perceptions of reality
(Goal 5)
- Individual
student presentations on famous oldsters. Presentations will focus on (a)
the role the person assumed during post retirement, and (b) what motivated
the person to be productive and creative beyond 70 years of age. (Goal 6)
