Tribute to Naveen "Scott" Pejaver

May 19, 1976-May 26, 1997

The MTSU Debate Team would like to extend our gratitude to all of the people in the debate community who extended warmth, caring and tears to us during our time of need. You will never know how that helped us survive the tragic loss of Scott Pejaver. We all miss him dearly: a kind, generous, and intelligent person who can never be replaced in our hearts.

What Has Been Said

A Few Selected Comments

"Scott had justed turned 21 less than two weeks ago. He would have been a senior at MTSU but planned to do another year at MTSU after this coming year so he could do more theatre work and prepare for theatre grad school and a possible professional acting career. He was President of the Intercollegiate Debate Association at MTSU. He had the most popular radio show on campus. He was an excellent student and last spring had a 4.0 gpa. He cared about every member of our squad. He was loved by every member of our squad. I think he was an excellent debater -- he won lots of awards in the region and out of the region. He won Junior PKD Nationals at LSU-S, He won University of Miami JV in 1996, PKD BiRegionals in 96, lots of team and speaker awards at tournaments throughout.....He coached novices; he helped colleagues; he was the heart and soul of our squad and we will be nothing without him; he so looked forward to going to a workshop this summer and making a try for national level competition....."

"To those of you who did not know Scott. I can tell you that all that Russ said about him is true. We in the Southeast will miss him and mourn this loss greatly. As one who has judged him and worked with him at camp, I can say that I will greatly miss him and my prayers and thoughts go out to his family and the entire MTSU squad."

"Scott Pejaver will be greatly missed by the Southeast/Southeast Central Debate community. To continue the echo passed on by many already...Scott was a wonderful person and friend. He loved debate not because he majored in Speech or because he planned to go to law school but because he truly enjoyed the activity. He and his partner, Daniel Crews, were a perfect team in a round. I was always delighted when I looked at a debate pairing to find that I would be their judge. I knew the round would not only be competitive but entertaining as well. They made judging enjoyable!! Scott had even talked with me about possibly attending graduate school at UF and helping me coach the team. Our thoughts and prayers are with Scott's teammates, coaches and family. We so well understand the pain due to such a great loss as we experienced the loss of our teammate and friend, Scott Ogden, only two months ago. The Gators will truly miss Scott Pejaver--his style, his humor, his friendship will not be forgotten!"

"Most importantly though, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on what the weekend meant to me personally with respect to Scott Pejaver. I was emotionally moved several times throughout the weekend, not only when the team showed a videotape of Scott, but also during those random moments when I looked around and realized that for the first time in several years I was at the MTSU tournament and Scott was not there. I wanted to let Dr. Church, Mike Kreuger [sic], Daniel Crews and the MTSU debaters know that I know this weekend must have been incredibly difficult for you but you managed to orchestrate a beautiful and appropriate tribute to Scott.
At one point on Sunday, I was talking to Dr. Church and I told him that my favorite memory of Scott is at Midwest Debate Institute last summer when he asked some debaters if they thought that he debating in a clown suit would lower his credibility in rounds. That was pure Scott. In my several years on the circuit I have never met anyone who came close to Scott when it came to having fun in a round. I plan on keeping a toy in my tub in memory of Scott and I hope every time some one in a round pulls out a water gun or tells a joke, they remember him."

"Yeah, Scott was a lot fun and when I drew a judging assignment of pejaver and crews I knew I was in for a good time. But I also knew I was infor a hell of a good debate too. for those of you who didn't know scott he always had a good time in rounds and out, but he was a damn fine debater too."

"Being a former MTSU debater for almost three years, I was moved by the tournament (especially during the video). Larry Woods, former debater for Valdosta State, was very close to Scott, before he graduated. I had the opportunity of judging Scott several times and I always enjoyed it. I echo the sentiments shared by others."

Valdosta State
