Second Grade Web Quest
A note to parents: I am very excited to be working with your child. The activities that I have chosen are to help students reinforce what they have learned in class. Each activity needs to be done under the supervision of an adult. I understand that time is important and it will sometimes be difficult to go through these activities with your child. Therefore I have chosen activities that do not require an excessive amount of time. If you ever have any questions or if you have something you need to ask me please email me with comments or questions. Thank you for taking time to help your child learn. together, I think we will make this a very exciting and beneficial year for your child.
| Introduction: The teacher will get the student's attention by handing out an allotted amount of money to each child. The teacher will explain that this play money will be used in the grocery store that has been set up in the classroom. |
| Task: 2.1.2 Understand meanings of operations and
how they relate to one another. a. Develop a story problem that illustrates a given addition and subtraction number sentence. |
| Process: Each student must go around the room and shop for groceries with their play money. This will teach addition. They must not go over their amount of play money that they have been given. This part of the activity should take about 15 minutes. At the end of the 15 minutes the teacher will add up each student's purchases with help from the class. If the student has gone over the amount of money they have been given they will be asked to put some of their groceries back. This will teach subtraction. |
| Evaluation: Each student will receive participation points for this activity. If the student does not go over their money limit they will receive full credit and maybe even get to shop the candy isle for one treat. The student will also receive full credit if they go over their money limit as long as they participation in the subtraction problem. The students will receive a homework grade for their computer work. |
| Conclusion: For at home work, with the help from an adult, the students will go online and play a computer game. This game also has a helpful parent info button that I encourage you to check out. Please do not allow your child to use the calculator in this game. |
| Introduction: Their will be a number line taped to the floor. Each student will be asked to get into "frog mode." This will grab their attention because they will be allowed to croak like frogs for a short period of time. |
| Task: 2.1.2 Understand meanings of operation and how they
relate to one another. b. Use the number line to demonstrate addition and subtraction. |
| Process: Each student will take turns on the number line. The teacher will read out an addition or subtraction problem. In turn, each student will demonstrate the problem by jumping from number to number on the number line. |
| Evaluation: Each student will be evaluated on participation, self control, and by the accuracy of their number line jumps. The students will receive a homework grade for their computer work. |
| Conclusion: For at home practice, with help from an adult, each student will play the line jump game Line jumper. Please select the medium difficulty level for this game. Allow the children to play at least 15 line jumps. They may play more if they like. Please record their progress and send it on a piece of paper with your signature on it to class with your child. you may also just print their progress and send it to class. |
| Introduction: The teacher will use magnets that have numbers 1 to 20 on them. These magnets will be used on a magnetic surface in front of the class. Each student will also have their own magnetic board with magnet numbers 1 to 20. |
| Task: 2.1.2 Understand meanings of operation and how they
relate to one another. c. Write and identify number sentences that describe situations involving addition and subtraction. d. Write and explain related addition and subtraction sentence.

| Process: The teacher will ask questions and use the magnets as a visual aid. The students will work on their own magnet boards. A question will be asked by the teacher. Example question: If Johnny had eight apples and gave away three how many apples does he have left? After each question the students will use the magnets to write the number sentence, for example 8-3=5. The students will each hold up their magnetic boards with their answers then the teacher will demonstrate the correct answer on the board. |
| Evaluation: Each student will be graded on class participation. The students will receive a homework grade for their computer work. |
| Conclusion: c. Each student, with the help of an adult, will
be required to go online to do a magnet activity similar to the one
played in class
Number Sentences.
Parents: Help your student go to this website. They need to play both a
subtraction and an addition magnet game. Make up word problems and have
them write the number sentence with the magnets, ask them to demonstrate
their own story problem and number sentence, or follow the directions on
the website. Please check their activities for accuracy and send a
report of their activities and understanding (with your signature on it)
to class within two days. d. Parents: please access this website and print out the worksheet for your child. Do not allow them to use a calculator. This worksheet is to be completed and sent to school with your student the next day of class. Addition and subtraction worksheet. |
