Introduction:

    We will be reading Dr. Seuss's Cat in the Hat.  After reading the story with the class, you will be able to participate in the following activities with an educational assistant or a parent volunteer during reading center time.  With help from the Cat himself as well as his friend Clifford the Big Red Dog, we will learn more about the letters and sounds of the alphabet as well as words that have the same beginning and ending sounds and words that rhyme.  The educational assistant or parent volunteer is to guide the student through the WebQuest. 

Tasks:

K.1.04 Develop and maintain phonemic awareness.

     e.  Recognize and produce rhyming words.

     f.   Recognize words that have same beginning and ending sounds.

K.1.05 Develop and use decoding strategies.

     a.  Recognize and name all upper and lowercase letters of the alphabet.

K.1.07 Develop and extend reading vocabulary.

     a.  Build vocabulary by listening to literature and participating in discussions.

     e.  Read some words by sight (e.g., the, has, an, can, run and color and number

          words).

K.1.13 Begin to experience various literary and media genres.

     a.  Explore picture books.

Process:

1.  Listen to Cat in the Hat with the class.

2.  The first activity will help you practice letter names and the order of the alphabet.

4.  Now we will visit Clifford the Big Red Dog to help us practice phonics.

5.  Click on the following link to print off a Cat in the Hat printable hat.  After printing the hat, re-read Cat in the Hat with the educational assistant or parent volunteer.  Write down all the sight words that you can read on the hat.  After re-reading the story, discuss your favorite part of Cat in the Hat
