Initial License [this is NOT fully online due to the teacher education placement areas]

You may obtain an initial teaching license through MTSU's program. The license enables you to work in any PreK-12 school library (not in a classroom).

MTSU's program is state approved for licensing.

FYI  initial license candidates:

  • Initial license seekers enroll in Libs 6511, which replaces the two practica courses (LS6180 and LS 6190).
  • YOED 4000 Effective Classroom Management is required for students enrolled in student teaching courses. Graduate students do not enroll in YOED 4000, but you must complete all of its requirements as part of LS 6511. So, you will attend the classes and compelte all of the required work. You will submit the work to the library science program coordinator (keb) as well as the instructor in YOED 4000.
  • Library science students do not have to buy TK20.
  • Background checks and fingerprinting are part of the process for teacher education admission.
This teacher education process is not under the control of the Library Science program. The admission requirements are listed in the application packet. Get a packet  early so that you can plan your path to admission. Teacher Licensure is in Room 0174 Bldg LRC , telephone number: 615 904-8001, post office box: MTSU Box 0093
  • Get admitted to Grad School (Grad school packet is completed, but see Teacher Ed requirements so that you have the proper test score)
  • Get admitted to the Library Science program (department gets completed grad school packet)

  • Get admitted to Teacher Education

You must be admitted to teacher education and apply for a student teaching position well in advance of the semester of student teaching.
You will need original transcripts and a program of study. Your Degree Plan  is your program of study. This should be submitted with the teacher ed application, so make sure your advancement form is correct.
  • Alternative licensing is between the school system and the state DOE, not MTSU.  The state requires that an alternative license candidate is enrolled in an approved Teacher Ed program; therefore, you must meet the requirements to be admitted to Middle's teacher ed program.  The State DOE website is http://www.state.tn.us/education/lic/alta.shtml

MTSU does not initiate alternative licensing. Call Teacher Licensure for required documents AFTER your system okays the hiring on an alternative.

    For all students

The application for teacher license / endorsement and the Praxis registration will not be filed

     unless you initiate the process.

Contact Teacher Licensure Office at MTSU for the forms.
