For Degree Seeking Students

Check the graduate catalog or the website (http://www.mtsu.edu/~graduate/student/studforms.htm) for information

Advancement to Candidacy File this form before 24 credits are taken. A hold will be placed on registration without this form. Ms. Boudreau cannot remove the hold. The form takes a week to travel through the system. It is your responsibility to file the form.
  • Advancement to candidacy  should list all of the graduate courses needed to obtain the degree, even if you have not yet taken the courses. It should not list any undergraduate courses. This information is in the Graduate Catalog. Forms available from Grad Office and online.
  • This link will take you to a form that is filled in. Edit it to match your situation. Save it to your desktop (Word file) and edit it to meet your situation. Do not print and make scratch-outs! This is a part of your permanent file so it should be professional in appearance. If seeking initial certification, do not include your undergraduate coursework. There should be 33 credits listed unless you are receiving a second Masters degree from MTSU or taking LS 6511.

Substitution courses should be listed on the Advancement to Candidacy or on a Course  Substitution Form. Make sure you use the correct form (not the one from the Admissions Office).

Course substitution forms are required if you are substituting any course in the program. Please use the correct form! It is available from http://www.mtsu.edu/~records/sub.pdf as of November 2005.

If you change any portion of your program after filing the Advancement to Candidacy, you must submit a Revision to Candidacy form. http://www.mtsu.edu/~graduate/pdf/CandRevision.pdf as of November 2005

Take FOED 6610 as early as you can, because it fills up fast. All students in Ed Leadership have to take this.

Comprehensive Examinations
  • Comps are taken in your last semester and only if you are seeking a degree.
  • Please call the departmental secretary to register for comps in the first month of your last semester.
    • Email Ms. P AFTER you have registered for comps.
      • If you do not call in the first month, you will not be allowed to take comprehensive exams.
      • Graduation will be delayed one semester and you must register for 1 credit in that semester.
  • Access to the bank of questions used for comps is available from http://mtsu32.mtsu.edu:11485/CompExam/MEDLS.htm
  • All questions in the bank are possible on the comprehensive exam. Three to four questions from the bank will be included on the exam.
  • The questions are broad and based on elements from several courses. Keep all of your materials from Libs 6110, 6200, and 6130 for study. Other courses are included in the questions and you will need to review the texts for those as well. The purpose of the examination is to judge if you can function as a modern librarian and articulate the needs and vision of the modern school information center.
In your  final semester:
  • File Intent to Graduate Form in first week of semester of graduation.  Forms available from Grad Office.
  • Register for comprehensive exams by calling the Ed Leadership office (898-2331) in the first month of semester of graduation

The Advancement to Candidacy, Intent to Graduate Form, and Comprehensive Exams are your responsibility. Make sure that you file on time.

Seeking initial license If you are degree seeking, you will follow the procedures above and apply to teacher education. You will enroll in Libs 6511, which replaces the two practica courses.

This teacher education process is not under the control of the Library Science program. The admission requirements are listed in the application packet. Get a packet  early so that you can plan your path to admission. Teacher Licensure is in Room 0174 Bldg LRC , telephone number: 615 904-8001, post office box: MTSU Box 0093

You must be admitted to teacher education and apply for a student teaching position well in advance of the semester of student teaching.bullet
You will need original transcripts and a program of study. Your advancement to candidacy is your program of study. This should be submitted with the teacher ed application, so make sure your advancement form is correct.bullet.
  • Alternative licensing is between the school system and the state DOE, not MTSU.  The state requires that an alternative license candidate is enrolled in an approved Teacher Ed program; therefore, you must meet the requirements to be admitted to Middle's teacher ed program.  The State DOE website is http://www.state.tn.us/education/lic/alta.shtml

MTSU does not initiate alternative licensing.

For Non-degree Seeking Students who hold a current teaching license bulletComplete the required coursework (library courses and the 6 credits of field experiences (practica or supervised field experience)

bulletComplete an application for the endorsement to your teaching license. This is the State Dept. of Education's domain, not MTSU's. Middle only certifies that you did complete the requirements; the state grants the endorsement. Do this after you have completed all coursework.

bulletSubmit your Advancement to Candidacy (which is your program of study) with the application. If you have made any changes to your courses listed on the A/C, you must submit the change requests as well.

bulletThe State requires a passing Praxis II score on the specialty test (10310). Make sure that you

have Praxis scores sent to MTSU

File for the Endorsement

For all students

The application for teacher license / endorsement and the Praxis registration will not be filed

 unless you initiate the process.

Contact Teacher Licensure Office at MTSU for the forms.

FAQS about your license or an endorsement to the license: http://mtsu32.mtsu.edu:11458/FQA.htm

Practica

bulletPractica information is available under the Field Experiences button at the top of this page

bulletYou can set up your own practicum so that the drive is kept to a minimum. You initiate the contact

with the school librarian and must present the Sponsoring Librarian packet and the application to

the librarian.

bulletFill out the forms, give the sponsoring librarian his/her packet. The principal's signature is very

important!

bulletYou cannot do a practicum in your own school--you will never be regarded as a librarian if you are

 not so appointed.

bulletYou cannot spread out the practicum with an hour here and there--that will result in you as unpaid

 clerical help!

bulletYou cannot start working in the school until  the complete application packet is submitted to the

 instructor.

bulletPractica hours can be worked up to two weeks before a semester starts. If you work on your fall or

spring break, you must enroll in the practicum that semester and take an Incomplete if your hours

are not finished by semester's end.

Students must be in the school and able to use the library when you do your hours. The only exception will be for inventory or beginning of the year startup.

Practica are experiential learning, not observation only.

Obtain an application for the license or endorsement from the Office of Teacher Licensure at

 615-898-2877

Submit the application and required materials to Teacher Licensure in the LRC.

Teacher Licensure is in Room 175 Bldg LRC , post office box: MTSU Box 0093
