LIBS 6190 Library Science Practicum 7-12 3 credits 100 clock hours in a school library; full day

LIBS 6511 Directed Teaching (Library Science) 9 credits full day, full semester student teaching in 2 school libraries + YOED 4000 taken concurrently (12 hours total) Fall and Spring only (replaces Libs 6180 AND Libs 6190)  
  • Students must have completed at least 12 credits of Lib Sci courses before they can apply for a field experience.
  • For students with teaching credentials, six credits of practicum (LIBS 6180 and LIBS 6190 ) are required.
  • For students without teaching credentials, a student teaching experience is required (LIBS 6511) Admission to teacher education unit requires FOED 1110 and SPSE 6430 or equivaliencies
  • For students who are employed as full time librarians in a school library, the practicum that matches your school grade level will be completed in your library.

Prerequisite or Concurrent:
All year -- SPSE 3220 (Technology in Teaching) on consent of instructor (if you are not totally proficient with computer use and web use) Do not take until you talk to the Lib Sci professor
Comprehensive exams must be taken to be awarded the M.Ed. These are taken in the semester of graduation.
Licensure:
To attain Tennessee licensure as a school information specialist, students must 
  • file an application for licensure with MTSU's office of teacher licensure.
  • pass the Praxis II  Librarian Specialty test.
Applicants without teaching credentials are required to complete an additional 9 credit hours of education coursework which will enable them to attain the competencies specified in the Department of Education’s Professional Core. (FOED 1110,  SPSE 6430, SPED 3010)
These students must also pass the Praxis II Principles of Learning and Teaching.

There are two admissions if you are seeking the degree

If you are seeking an initial certification, there will be a third admission process to the Teacher Education program. Teacher Ed requires an ACT, SAT, GRE, or PPST score for admission. Call them for acceptable scores. 615.898.5573
