June 23 to June 27, 1863
Up until this point, the Union commander, William S.
Rosecrans, had kept his planning largely to himself in
order to preserve security. On June 23rd he
unveiled his carefully prepared strategy to get behind the
Confederate Army entrenched in Shelbyville by moving
first on
Manchester and then to Tullahoma. If Rosecrans
plan was effective the Army of
Tennessee would be forced to abandon Shelbyville
and retreat either directly south into Alabama or southeast toward
Chattanooga.
