Life on the Homefront:
Life in the rural middle
Tennessee heartland during the Civil War was an experience unique unto
itself as husbands, wives, sons, and daughters endured the hardships
associated with war and the presence of troops from both Union and
Confederate armies. Shortages in food, foraging armies, and divided
loyalties made the lives they had known before the war a thing of the past.
This lesson focuses on the crippling nature of the virtual no-mans land that
existed in the Tullahoma Campaign area during the war.
Life of a Soldier:
Students can chose to be either a
Union soldier far from home or a Confederate soldier fighting to defend his
home and family. Experience enlistment or being drafted, living on
short rations, writing a letter home to tell your family about the war,
camaraderie of camp life, or losing a friend in battle, each brings students
closer to some of the hardships soldiers endured.
Civil War Army Tactics:
The
Railroad:
The railroad played an
important part in the development of middle Tennessee.
This program explores the history of rail during the late antebellum, Civil
War, and reconstruction periods in the Tullahoma Campaign area and provides
a unique, informal learning experience for students. Museum and school
partnerships are an excellent
way to build greater understanding and knowledge. This program also
supports school curriculum objectives for 5th grade but can be
tailored to meet the level and need of
each level.
